Mary (mjfelts) | 4 comments Ummm...hi. I joined your group because I love to read classics and because I think it's important to read them. My name is Mary, and I live in Georgia, USA. I have another book club that I actually started, but when we get together, it always disintegrates into alcohol and gossip. (Not that that's always a bad thing, but I do like to discuss a book.)Anywho, looking forward to these discussions! :)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Dana, welcome to the group and i'm glad you enjoyed books that only few did. We can't wait to discuss The Hobbit and To Kill a Mockinbird next month, stay tune and have fun reading! This is my latest and so far I fall in love to the book club, well, I joined a lot of local book clubs before and we still meet once a month to discuss books.

Hi Mary, welcome to the group! You just found the perfect group for you, why not join our next month's books, The Hobbit and To Kill a Mockingbird. (Don't worry, I also joined a book club recently and every time we met we usually gossip and eat for a day. The bad thing is, they, you know, never mind. Haha.)

message 264: by Alex (new)

Alex | 3 comments Hi Kwesi - I think if you were taught The Iliad and The Odyssey as a book to be read from cover to cover then you were set to have an unpleasant experience. They are poems and should be read as that, you can't expect to take in all of the detail because some of the language is so dense. Try them again (Robert Fagles translations) and don't feel you have to read every word or even chapter! I think my sister in law may have read The Historian so I will try to borrow that - thanks for the recommendation.

Nicolle - Hi. Glad I can be of some use. I will do my best to be helpful should the occasion arise!

Namida... | 41 comments Hey all!!!
i find I'm the second one here from Egypt but I'm from Cairo not Alex. Classics are what spurred my passion for reading so i consider them my haven whenever I'm feeling down or alone. most of the stuff I've read are for women writers plus Charles Dickens, dunno why i did that though :)
I'm excited to join in with the discussions especially for To Kill a Mockingbird as i loooooove this book, and too bad i've missed out on Dracula, but well, it can't be helped. ^^

message 267: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Namida....glad that you have joined us....I hope that you enjoy this group!!!!

message 270: by Mrs. H (new)

Mrs. H (salmagundi) | 2 comments I'm so very pleased to have found this reading group! I have had the notion to start reading the classics again and I have been steaming ahead with the likes of Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights. I plan on participating in September's read. The last time I read To Kill a Mockingbird was when I was about 12 years old for a school book report. It's been on my list to read again for quite sometime and this will prove the perfect opportunity!

Currently I am living in Glasgow, Scotland via Buffalo, NY.

message 271: by Nicolle (last edited Aug 26, 2011 05:21AM) (new)

Nicolle Hello Mrs H.
Glasgow is where my parents are from! I have been there, where abouts are you from??

message 272: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) Hi! I'm Suzie and I live near London in England. I read most genres and read quite a few classics in high school (I lived in South Africa at the time). Tess of the D'Urbervilles was a stand-out classic for me ...

Anyway, it's been a while since I actually read a classic, so I thought I'd join this group to get me back into it. I usually attempt to join the Seasonal Reading Challenge on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ every season, and for the Autumn/Fall season I have Frankenstein lined up as one of my books.

I see To Kill A Mockingbird is the next group read on here! One I remember reading in high school and enjoying. I will definitely re-read and join the discussion! :)

message 273: by Mrs. H (new)

Mrs. H (salmagundi) | 2 comments I am from Buffalo, New York, I immigrated here 3 1/2 years ago and married my husband who is a Glaswegian :)

message 275: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to all the new members...wow our little group is growing very quickly...so glad to see!! I am glad that so many love to read the classics!!!

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments @Alex: Thanks for recommending, I might read it later in life but I'm not sure when since I never prioritize poems. Haha. Have fun reading.

Hi Mrs. H, welcome to the group and we can't wait to read your book report again. Kidding. Anyway, feel free to post anything on the thread given. Sweet reads.

Hi SuzieR, welcome to the group and this is the perfect place to read and share classics again. Don't be shy, feel free to post anything on the board.

message 277: by kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (last edited Aug 26, 2011 05:48AM) (new)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Tango, welcome to the group!

Hello Lars, welcome to the group. Jane Eyre and Emma are one of my favorites this year and the rest, they are still on my list, books that are to be explore in the near future. Read To Kill a Mockingbird next month!

Hi Namida, welcome to the group! I don't know if you like anime but I do. Haha. I have a friend here in groodreads from Australia who only reads classics and male authors only, how's that?! Haha. There are many books to come soon, so don't worry to read any of the books.

message 279: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Hi, I'm Sashana. I have a hard time reading and enjoying classics so hopefully this group can help me remedy this problem. I enjoy reading YA, PNR, UF, and Romace (all the subgenres). I'm a college freshman drowning in a sea of school work. And just you run of the mill average girl.

Hey Sashana, you sound exactly like me until I discovered classics!

message 281: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Stephanie and Sashana....very glad that both of you are here....welcome pull up a chair a wonderful classic and enjoy the group!!!

message 282: by Sara (new)

Sara (readsarareadmore) Hi! I'm Sara. I am very excited to join this group. The only classics I have read were assignments in literature classes growing up. Reading them in a classroom setting ruined the books for me. I did not enjoy picking apart every paragraph that was written to discuss its meaning and symbolism. I think this is why I have mostly read suspense and horror novels.

It's great to see so many new members. Hello to everyone!

Alan M | 2 comments Hi Kwesi, Thanks for the warm welcome. As of yet I don't have any titles to recommend off the top of my head but maybe you do. The count of Monte Cristo would have to be a book I just remembered from reading another members post a true must read.

message 288: by Terri Lynn (new)

Terri Lynn (terrilynnmerritts) | 22 comments Hi, everyone, I am Terri from San Francisco, California in the USA. I have to confess that with having a college degree in English Literature and with plans to earn a master's and PhD in the subject, I am not exactly a beginner at all. In fact, I have been reading the classics since I was a gifted child. I joined this group because you are reading classics and I will gladly reread them with you. It is also exciting for me to see favorite classics through the fresh eyes of those reading them for the first time. I am delighted to be here with all of you.

message 299: by Amy (new)

Amy Sjoquist (amywan71) Hello all. I'm Amy and I live in North Dakota in the US. I love to read but am deficient in the classics, though I have always wanted to read more. In high school most kids here have had to read certain books but I wasn't and have always felt left out. Looking forward to this!

message 300: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Hi--I'm Vicki. I am starting to read the classics. I was thinking one or two a month would be a good goal, and this sounds like a good group. I am in Arizona, US.
