Nathaniel Luscombe This is such a funny question because it's so unexpected. I picked it up because a friend of mine was published in it and I love supporting my friends. I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise, but at the same time...I do read a lot of unexpected indie books just because I like to so it might've crossed my path anyways.
Nathaniel Luscombe Titles just come to me. Some of my stories were titles before they were stories. I'm not sure how I come up with them, but I'm grateful to be a good 'titler'.
Nathaniel Luscombe I started really pursuing my writing in grade six. Wrote lots of atrocious Wattpad stories that were really foundational in my growth and confidence.
Nathaniel Luscombe The new version follows the same plot. I've just expanded some scenes to make it less narrative and more immersive. I also smoothed out the writing and turned it into something that feels current and up to date with my skill.
Nathaniel Luscombe I take a break. It took me a long time to come to terms with this, but sometimes the brain just needs a break. It needs time to breathe and collect itself before throwing stories out. Between December of 2021 and January of 2022 I hardly did any writing, but 10 days into February I was able to get back to my writing. It was so good for me, and I don't regret taking that break. Make sure you take care of yourself before worrying about your fictional characters.
Nathaniel Luscombe That is a book called A Web of Lies. It's the first book I ever finished and thought "Wow, I'm a good writer." I got one copy printed because I was so proud of it. It's definitely not something that will ever see the light of day, as I finished it like five years ago and it's not that good, but I'm still very proud of that book.
Nathaniel Luscombe Music is a BIG part of my inspiration. I listen to everything from the current popular songs to small artists that I find by hunting through Spotify. I also try to read the genres that I'm writing, as it helps me when I see what other people have done. Inspiration is something that comes suddenly to me, so there is no one method when it gets to actually feeling the story.
Nathaniel Luscombe The fulfillment in finishing a story. Fun fact, I finished my first ever full rough draft yesterday... 2021/07/19 is a very special date for me as a writer. But yeah, now I'm reading through it and LOVING it. I WROTE THIS. HOW?! It's stunning. I can't wait to share it with people.
Nathaniel Luscombe Favourite Sanderson book? It feels wrong to answer this. I have to say it's a tie between Words of Radiance and Starsight. Both of those books did things to me. I am not over either of them.
Nathaniel Luscombe My biggest writing goal (aside from being published by a publisher and hitting the NYT Bestseller list) is to write an 800-1000 page book. I love reading thick books and it's a huge dream of mine to write one at some point. Even now I struggle to write things that are 200-300 pages so I have a lot of growth to get through before I reach that point.
Nathaniel Luscombe My writing has been inspired by many people. I first was determined to become an author when I read Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I think he was a major inspiration for a lot of aspiring writers. Combined with Rick Riordan, Kenneth Oppel, and Michael Crichton, I began to pull specific things out of their writing that I wanted to have. I wanted Paolini's character dynamics, Riordan's humour, Oppel's thrilling plots and cool concepts, and Crichton's pacing and style. I do not think I have successfully acquired this yet, but I think I am well on my way to becoming the author that I want to be.
