As a child in rural Oregon, Kate Elliott made up stories because she longed to escape to a world of lurid adventure fiction. She now writes fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction, often with a romantic edge. She currently lives in Hawaii, where she paddles outrigger canoes and spoils her schnauzer.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Jaran books. I don't currently have a timetable for the completion of the rest of the Jaran cycle, although I know what it covers. My medium term goal is to write a standalone novella as a new entry point into the world (since it's been so long), and while I do have that started, I'm not sure when I will have a chance to finish it. Unfortunately that's all the news I have at the moment. I appreciate your question, and your patience, and thank you SO MUCH for reading.(less)

News: The Black Wolves Trilogy

My epic fantasy novel Black Wolves was published in 2015, the first of the Black Wolves Trilogy, published by Orbit Books. In summer 2016, Orbit canceled books 2 and 3 while retaining the rights. What this meant was that they were not going to publish books 2 and 3 but I couldn’t either. At that point I had about 70,000 words of Dead Empire written and a complete outline for the book, as well as e

Jennifer,

Thank you so much for your kind words about "The Long Walk." I knew I wanted to write the story of this "long walk" for years but thought I couldn't make it work, and then I did! So I'm really pleased with it, and delighted that so many peop See Full Answer

Brittany, Thank you so incredibly much for these very kind words. I am so honored to have been of help to you in a low point. That means so much to any writer, I believe. I couldn't do this gig without readers like you, and I so appreciate that you h See Full Answer

“I will either find a way, or make one.”
Kate Elliott, Cold Magic

“A kiss can be like the world turning over. It can be like the tide of a dragon's dream washing through the unseen world that is hidden to mortal eyes but that nevertheless permeates our being. It can be hot and cold together, as vast as the heavens and yet specific to the pressure of hands and the parting of lips. It raised more intense feelings than I had expected, like being engulfed in a storm of lightning.”
Kate Elliott, Cold Magic

“...because when beauty awes you, you must halt and try to catch your breath and your staggered heart.”
Kate Elliott, Shadow Gate

Lucinda,

thank you so much for the kind words! I don't do a lot on goodreads except mirror my blog posts here, because I know there are people reading such things here who may not be on Twitter or reading blogs. I am always eager to find places where I can say "thank you" to my wonderful readers!
