The Pleasures of Writing a Series by Jess Michaels
Hi everyone and thanks so much to Suz for having me here today. It’s a very exciting day, as it’s the release date for my latest book, A Matter of Sin. This erotic historical romance is the first in a new series, The Ladies Book of Pleasures, about a very naughty book circulating through the ton and the ripples of passion and love it leaves in its wake for three friends.
I have to admit, I love, love, love writing a series. In fact, most of my books (and all of books as Jess Michaels) have been parts of various series. I started with The Albright Sisters series (Everything Forbidden, Something Reckless, Taboo and Nothing Denied), then I wrote The Mistress Matchmaker series (An Introduction to Pleasure, For Desire Alone and Her Perfect Match) and I just finished The Pleasure Wars a few weeks ago (Taken By the Duke, Pleasuring the Lady, Beauty and the Earl and Beautiful Distraction (which came out just on June 24). And now this newest series, The Ladies Book of Pleasures, will last this whole year (A Matter of Sin, A Moment of Passion October 14, A Measure of Deceit December 9).
What is so appealing to me as a writer in a series? Well, I think it’s the idea of really creating a family of characters. In The Ladies Book of Pleasures the heroines are all best friends. Two of the heroes are also best friends. They know each other, they love each other and I think through their love and caring for each other, my readers get to have a moment in that “family.
I hope they feel like they are part of the friendship the women share, I hope they fall in love with them and feel for Isabel, the heroine of A Matter of Sin, who has been along a long time and longs for a lover. I hope they root for the heroine of the second book, A Moment of Passion, Jacinda, who suffered a TERRIBLE scandal that nearly destroyed her and turns to an old friend for both help and comfort. And I hope they adore Grace, the heroine of the third book, A Measure of Deceit, who is the toughest of the three but also hides the most secrets.
For me, it’s fun to get to know the heroines and heroes of a series and then it just becomes my fervent hope that readers will feel the same way I do.
Series Overview:
The naughty Ladies Book of Pleasures is scandalizing the ton with its erotic descriptions and encouragement of ladies to embrace their sensual sides. But it’s also raising questions along with eyebrows. Who wrote it? Who is reading it? And how many risks will those reading it take to find passion and love?
Description:
The widowed Lady Isabel Avenbury has one remaining younger sister to shepherd into an advantageous marriage, and then she will be free. Free to take a lover to fill her lonely nights—the only option left for a woman on the delicate edge of a certain age.
Except when she chaperones her sister to a country house party, she is taken aback with her sudden, undeniable attraction to the host. And deliciously scandalized when she finds a copy of the notorious, much-gossiped-about Ladies Book of Pleasures in his library.
When Seth Rowland, Marquis Lyndham, notices his book is missing, his interest is piqued as to which of the potential young brides at his party has absconded with it—and shocked to discover it’s Isabel. Though older than the women he’d planned to court, the powerful beauty exudes a sensuality he cannot ignore.
The book inspires them to begin a desperate, passionate affair. But their time together is running out and they must choose. Follow society’s rules, or take a chance at love.
