Readers' Most Anticipated Fall Mysteries & Thrillers

As a category, Mysteries & Thrillers covers a wide range of storytelling styles: police procedurals, private investigations, espionage, noir, cozies, historical, legal, paranormal…the list goes on.
Because this genre is so reliably popular with readers, you’ll find all of these and more on bookshelves this fall. We’ve compiled below the most anticipated titles of the upcoming season, as determined by early reviews, ratings, and ŷ regulars Want to Read shelves. The books are sorted by month this time around, to help facilitate your reading calendar.
Some spotlight items, in no particular order: The inimitable Rachel Kushner is back this September with Creation Lake, a fascinating noir about a mysterious American woman infiltrating a French anarchist collective. On the cozier side of things, Richard Osman (The Thursday Murder Club series) profiles a father-in-law/daughter-in-law investigator team with We Solve Murders.
Comic book fans may want to check out Alex Segura’s Alter Ego, a kinda-sorta sequel to 2022’s Secret Identity, both of which feature deadly intrigue in the comics industry. The new novel from genre veteran Liane Moriarty, meanwhile, asks an uncomfortable question: What would you do if you knew exactly when and how you will die?
Finally, fans of Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me—winner of the 2021 ŷ Choice Award mystery prize—may want to save some shelf space for The Night We Lost Him, featuring estranged siblings, family secrets, and a reportedly bananas final twist.

I can't wait for the new book.

I was privileged to receive an advanced copy of The Grey Wolf and Gamache fans will not be disappointed!

Thanks! We've fixed this!

Ah, Grace! You’re in for a treat. I would recommend starting at the beginning (Still Life), while each book can stands on its own merits, there are some beautiful character and story arcs if you read them in order. The books get better as Louise polishes her craft too!

grace i know its not louise penny but its lighter read

Hi Grace,
in my opinion you have to start with the first Gamache book and read them in sequence. I also think that the first 4 books are more or less really good crime fiction, but I didn't get addicted until Book 5. However, without the first 4, I couldn't have enjoyed Book 5 and all later ones. There is a long and important story arc from Book 1 to Book 10. Also, the Gamache books are really about this magical village Three Pines and its inhabitants, and also about the fascinating character of Gamache. If you can, start with Book 1 and enjoy the journey - it gets ever better :)

Just start at the beginning. You will love them all!

Start at the beginning of the series. That will introduce you to all the characters that will continue throughout her books and to Inspector Gamache! You will enjoy them!

I am also interested in the new Freida McFadden, the new Loreth Anne White, the new Jason Rekulak, and several others!

I was lucky enough to win a copy of The Sequel in a ŷ Giveaway, and the giveaway is still going on, for anyone interested!

Start with the first book, Three Pines.

Start with her first book. They build on each other . I got hooked immediately.
