Gah! I am so over this series. I rarely review anymore but I have such strong negative emotions that it's happening. Brace yourselves.

The Hallows was awesome when it started but it's something completely different now. The characters are completely different. Jenks, Ivy, everyone has become 2 dimensional. Nothing more than a back up prop to Rachel and her ridiculous love life. I'm getting to the point that any time a male character is introduced I can expect Rachel to see him as a potential mate Gah! I am so over this series. I rarely review anymore but I have such strong negative emotions that it's happening. Brace yourselves.

The Hallows was awesome when it started but it's something completely different now. The characters are completely different. Jenks, Ivy, everyone has become 2 dimensional. Nothing more than a back up prop to Rachel and her ridiculous love life. I'm getting to the point that any time a male character is introduced I can expect Rachel to see him as a potential mate. Hell, I'm waiting for her to get small and start getting it on with Jenks, or Quen in spite of Ceri. I'm really over it. The whole things fell apart with the death of Kisten. I feel like the fans wanted more love story, and KH decided that to add romantic angst Rachel had to be single. But it's all so poorly done. She's attracted to EVERYONE. I mean, when she's thinking of THE DEMON WHO ALMOST KILLED HER AND STARTED HER ON THE PATH OF BLACK MAGIC in a romantic way, the character and story have jumped the shark. Though truthfully this series jumped the shark many books ago.

And speaking of, what the hell with the black magic. In the first book Rachel was all, I'm an Earth witch. Then she became a ley line witch. Then she started doing black magic, with hesitance and what she was as great consequences, the smut on her soul. Now it's just a matter of course. It's basically taken the book into an anything goes situation. There's no rules to follow. It feels like she has all the power at her fingertips. There's no more suspense because you basically know she's come out of any situation hunky dory.

And Trent. I mention this in EVERY SINGLE BOOK REVIEW from this series. Trent was a bad guy! He was a great bad guy. He killed people to further his own interests. Then the fans decided that they liked that he was attractive and wanted Rachel to end up with him, so Trent has been morphing into a good guy. His past actions explained away, and the really bad ones just forgotten about. I like character growth but this isn't plausible, believable character growth. (view spoiler)

Basically the whole series is hitting me with massive eye rolling waves. I'm probably going to finish the series but only because it's one of the few pnr series my library has on mp3 audiobook format. If I had to spend money on these books I'd be more then happy to just let them be. ...more

Shelves: urban-fantasy

The ninth book in the Hollows series has it all, great pacing, lovely character moments, action, humor. It was my favorite of the series at the time that I read it but with four more books to go that can change. This series shows no signs of slowing down or of going out with a whimper, which is always a danger with long running series. Rachel and her crew though, I predict that they will go out in style.
