Hello! I love your book! I teach high school English in NC, and my school purchased a class set of your book. Some of my students read it this year for an independent project and loved it. The main character is really relatable. Was it challenging to write a realistic teenager?

Hey Madison! Thanks so much for your question. Sorry it took so long for me to answer. I'm thrilled that you-- and your peers-- loved the book. I always think that's a challenge. I'm cough 30 cough now and the older many of us authors get, the more difficult it can become to actually write a teenage voice authentically. I was really helped by the fact that I was teaching at the time that I wrote Nyxia. So aside from my wife's voice, the number one thing I was hearing every day were the opinions and thoughts and hilarious and awkward voices of my teenage students. So with that fresh and on my mind, turning around in the afternoon and writing Emmett's story was actually pretty easy for me. Thanks again for the question!

I was wondering what happened to Jaime? I'm rereading your books to see if I missed anything, but I'm just wondering why, in the beginning, he seemed so nonchalant about the money. Also, when Emmett is talking about Azima kissing both Longwei and Bilal, he says "It's not 2020 anymore, man. Girl's got the right to kiss who she wants." even though your book was published in 2017. Was this a reference to COVID? :o

Do you outline your books? If so, how? How did you get the idea for nyxia and how it works, and how did you decide how to give nyxia its name? Also, you came to my school, and I'd just like to say that your book was really good, and your talk really motivated me to continue to write and get better at it. :)
