Dianne asked:

Hi Goodreaders! I'm a Stephen King fan so naturally, I was drawn to Dean Koontz books. However, it seems some of his books have an element of evil/horror that may have me not being able to sleep at night. Can someone recommend me a Koontz novel that is a good thriller/suspense; but less on the horror/evil side? Maybe more like Stehpen KIng's 'Misery', 'Christine', 'Cell'. Hope someone can help me!

Tom Dianne, I've been reading both King and Koontz for years and on the whole I find Koontz's books much less disturbing than King's, he's a devout Catholic and very gentle person so I wouldn't worry too much, not that they can't be very disturbing sometimes because they can, but nothing a King fan would worry about IMO.
M. definitely the Odd Thomas series.
Laurie I just finished ODD THOMAS by Koontz.I found it funny and creepy. No horror at all. I plan to read the series.I read this every night at bedtime. Just a good mystery.
Roz Curney-Sherod Dianne, my first Koontz both was "Lightening" and I really enjoyed that one. Have to agree with everyone else, I stopped reading King because the endings were very disappointing.
Sharon My first Koontz and still a favorite was Watchers. Loved the dog. The biggest difference I find between King and Koontz is the resolution at the end of Koontz' stories. With King, it's usually the evil has been defeated, but not destroyed. It just moves on. Koontz is lighter with more humor interwoven with the characters. You might also want to try Robert McCammon,John Saul, or Dan Simmons.
Keith Chamberlin I'd say the Good Guy and The Husband are more traditional 'crime' type books by Koontz that had plenty of spins and twists but no real horror. Enjoy!
riquel stewart Late to the party as usual, but I have a couple of Dean Koontz favorites. I don't think they are scary, more suspenseful. My favorite is "Lightening", followed by "Whispers" and then "Servants of Twilight".
Pebble Tedford I don't find DK as scary as SKing!! I'm not sure why, except I love Dean Koontz's humor. I especially love the ones he has a Golden Retriever staring. Watchers is one I especially liked. The Odd series by DK is a little scary, but very different - and still the humor. I hope you've found one you like, and will move on thru his books.
Aimee I was an avid reader of all things King for many years. That was until my mom recommended Dragon Tears. Talk about a terrific novel!! Its not all monsters and horror, but it has that scary edge that makes it a true horror story. I love King, but more often than not, he adds way too much detail. Koontz gets right to the heart of the story!! Happy reading!!
Kyle Elizabeth Wood The Odd Thomas Series. Spooky, creepy, clever but I didn't lose any sleep.
Trish Berry Dark Rivers of the Heart.
Doniell TRY THE JANE HAWK SERIES
McKenzie Janice Thacker By the light of the moon is a good one,not to bad and it's a series that will keep you reading. I am a huge King fan.
R Leonard I second watchers, my first and fav as well!
Heidi McMaster Winter Moon is creepy. First book I read of Koontz. It was an intense read!
