Lev Grossman I try not to comment on this stuff too much. But when a writer really wants to kill a character, for good, he/she generally does a more thorough job than I did with Alice.

First, I wanted to thank you—your books meant a lot to my mom and have meant a ton to me. Perhaps un peu philosophically: How much agency did you feel over the story arc of The Magicians novels? I’m not talking about plot here. Because even as I loathsomely raged at the particular twists and turns of sorrow your books caused me, I never doubted they were the natural, even necessary, course for the story to take.
