Reading 1001 discussion
Welcome to READING 1001
>
Introduce yourself

I am a former member from Shelfari, and absent
the last few months due to changes in my household
and priorities.
My name is MaryAnn and I am 64, a long time resident
of the USA state of Colorado. I am married (33yrs),
recently reunited with my dh after a 3.5 yr separation.
I have 4 children, 11 grands, and 3 great grands.
I am physically disabled since 2005 and happy
to retire this year. I am a veteran of the US Army
and a Roman Catholic, Benedictine Oblate, and reader.
I have been a voracious reader for many years,
however, I have grown lazy because of my interest
and frequent use of the computer, and don't read as
much now.
My reading tastes cover most of the topics:
autobiography/biography/memoir; history, religion,
mystery, poetry (esp. Emily Dickinson), self-help, and
since joining the 1001 in Shelfari, I am trying to learn
to appreciate modern literature and the classics. I find
them hard to stay interested in and some to be
nonsensical. However, I intend to continue to try to
learn what I can from.

I remember you. I am just behind you at 63, 2 children, 2 grands. I am still working and will for a few years. Have you joined the Catholic group with John? I know what you mean about the computer burning up one's time. Emily Dickenson is my favorite poet as well but I like some Frost and a few others too, but I am not very drawn to sitting a reading poetry. I like reading a lot of stuff too. This year, I've been reading off list a lot.

I just picked up a Frost's book of poems and I like all I have read.
Right now, I am reading Good Poems by ?. My goal is to read 3 per day, I date each one after reading them. I like two poets that a friend told me about, both Chinese (in English) (Li-Po?). I can't remember the names right now but will look them up soon. I started out the year pretty well, but have fallen way behind this summer. Looking forward to getting more read this winter.

Hi MaryAnn - too bad you weren't here to read Story of the Stone with us - lots and lots of Chinese poetry in the story.
The Catholic book club I've inherited and brought over from Shelfari is called The Catholic Book Club (clever, right?). If you're interested you can find us here - /group/show/...
Welcome Renee :)
I am Book Worm on Jen's Blog and Book Worm here so easy to remember.
Hope you have fun joining in with our challenges and if you would like your own randomized list just give me a shout in that thread.

Welcome Kathleen! It is also never too late to join us and tackle one or several of the Hercules Labours. If you are not afraid of snakes, you still have 17 days to read one of the two books up for the challenge.

Welcome Kathleen hope you have as much fun here as I do :)

I have known about the list for years, but just recently started to pick books from it as I just bought myself the Boxall book. This seems like a friendly group, happy to join you! I have only read 36 books from the list so far, but that only means more to come ;)
I will browse through the different challenges that you have, and try to familiarise myself, looking forward to exploring new authors as we go.

Welcome Hilde, hope you enjoy our little group :)
What books/ authors would you recommend from Norway?
What books/ authors would you recommend from Norway?

Many good authors from Norway, unfortunately not all of them get translated. But some of my favourites by the ones that are translated are Roy Jacobsen, Per Petterson, Lars Saabye Christensen, Dag Solstad and Karl Ove Knausgård.
Of the old classics that have made it to this list I am very fond of Knut Hamsun and Sigrid Undset, as well as Jens Bjørneboe. I just re-read Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun, which I haven't read since my schooldays, and absolutely loved it. Have you read any books from Norway?
PS: Book Wormy; the random books that you have in one thread seems like fun. Could you please generate one list for me? I sent a message in that thread, but I don't know if it got trough, so trying again here:) Thanks!

As far as I am aware the only Norwegian authors I have read are Jo Nesbo and Jan Kjærstad. I really enjoyed the seducer by Jan Kjærstad it's one of my favourite books and I must make time to read the next book in the series.
Will just pop over now and do you a randomised list, for some reason I don't get notifications from GR so it sometimes takes me a while to update :)

I have the trilogy about Jonas Wergeland by Kjærstad in my bookshelves unread. Maybe I must make time for them soon, I have heard from multiple people that is is very good.

I've read Sigrid Unset (Kristen Lavransdattir) and Tarjei Vesaas (The Birds). I thought both were amazing.

Welcome, Kandice. No need to feel guilty. We all read what we enjoy, also. And I wouldn't say that everything on The List is great literature - but a lot of it is, including some amazingly great reads by authors I had never heard of before, or had heard of but written off because they were old or had a reputation of one sort or another.

Hi Kandice, glad to see you here! :) There are no right or wrong books, just those which resonate better with us; and that should be really personal.
Welcome Kandice and Ying Ying :)
Kandice you will find a real mix of books on the list and a real mix of opinions about those books. I hate some of the books that everyone else seems to love and vice versa either way any reading is good.

I stumbled on the group, especially when I saw Shelfari in the discussion group's name. I was a member of Shelfari and like many of you regret its passing but without Amazon's support, it had to go.
I am John. I'm retired from mental health administration after 32 years working for the State of Georgia. I am married, one daughter and son-in-law with two grandchildren.
I'm an eclectic reader and love discussing the books that I read. Generally, I read several books at one time. Additionally, I always have a audiobook to listen to while in the car. My favorite genres are literary fiction, comtemporary fiction, historical fiction, mysteries and science fiction.

I've been reading 1001-books as a very casual and very long term project, and I'm a bit apprehensive about taking a firmer monthly approach, but we'll see how it goes!
What else... I'm a Norwegian living in the UK. And... I don't read Korean. (Why is reading Korean listed as a prerequisite on the challenge? Did I read that completely wrong?)

Hi, Leni, so glad you are joining us. LOL on the Korean. There is one book that is in Korean that has not been translated and it does not appear that there are any plans for a translation in near future. But there are also books in Dutch, etc. that do not have an English translation. So really it is nearly impossible to read the list before you die unless you are learning Korean and Dutch.

Aha! I'll just save those for last then. If they haven't been translated by the time I've read all the rest, I guess it's time to learn some more languages!

Welcome Leni! So glad you could join us here. There's no pressure to read very month. Some members drop in and out when they see a book that interests them. I do like the structure of having a planned read to discuss each month but I don't always read the BOTM. I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on the books we read together.
Anyway, glad to see you over here and I hope you enjoy the group!

Thank you for letting me know that there was a seasonal and a monthly read, Jen. I am assuming that the seasonal read is to change soon to a winter read? I would definitely like to fit in both.
