The Korean book has been translated into French, so if you read that you should be good. There is also a book in Amharic that has not been translated into English, but it has been translated into German. There are several of the Dutch books that have also been translated into German, but I haven't checked to see how many, if any, have not been translated at all. So English, German and French get you through almost the entire list, plus, maybe, Dutch for the last few. :-)

message 102: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 554 comments That's good news! My German needs some work, and my French a lot of work, but that's a vastly more doable prospect than learning Korean. And I have many years of English language/translation books to go through while I hone my other language skills. And if there are any Dutch books left after that, I'll just not read them and thus, by spurious logic, not die. ;)

:-)

There are a number of books on the list that can be fairly described as obscene - I have no plan to read them in any language - my own effort at longevity.

Hi Paula! I've lived in Wales for the past three years, but I'm in South Wales. So, a whole different world, really. lol Or so I'm led to understand. I haven't actually been to North Wales yet. (Or West, for that matter.) I wish the train connections were a bit better, as my youngest child suffers extreme car sickness. Which sort of limits the exploration we can do here! Hopefully he'll grow out of it. Meanwhile I'm planning on at least reading a book for each county of Wales, so if you have any recommendations for North Wales authors (in English) I'd be thrilled!

Dree | 243 comments Hi all, I am Dree (Audrey) and heard about this group from Jen on Litsy.

I have been working on the 1001 books list for years, only seriously for the last few. I am up to 179 from the combined list. I don't read Korean, Dutch, or German, and my high school French can get me through a menu or tourist pamphlet, but that's about it.

I had a horrible 6-week reading slump earlier this year and am still recovering. I have only read 9 list books this year!

Hi Dree! Welcome. It's nice to see you over here and I hope you enjoy the group! This group has certainly motivated me to read more list books. Take a look around and feel free to ask us any questions if you are confused. We will be reading Legend and The Roots of Heaven for our September discussion. We also do a seasonal read and annual read and anyone who requests one can get a randomized list (a list of books picked for you by the randomizer).

179 is a very solid number and I hope you find more great list books with us! Hopefully, no more reading slumps for you this year!

Hi, Dree! Great to see you here!

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) Hello .. again !! I am back to try to get some 1001 books read. I am easily overwhelmed and haven't gotten much read this summer. My right knee is to be replaced on Oct 4, (left one done on May 8) so I am hoping to get some books knocked off my list while I am recovering from it. The summer contest looks like fun so I may start there and see how far I can get.

Welcome back MaryAnn knee replacements sound painful but extra reading time is always a bonus :)

message 116: by Costa (new)

Costa (costa_s) Hello.

Well, this is the very first Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group I've ever joined. I was led here by reading the sometimes rather inflammatory (and sometimes wonderfully funny!) reviews of Paul Auster's "The New York Trilogy" on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, which I've finally plucked out of the mountain of unread books on my Kindle - which shouldn't be confused with the mountain of unread books on my bedside (or under my bed, or on the coffee table...) :)

Thanks for having me, I'd love to jump in and read along with the prescribed list once I finish Auster's novel, which I'm really enjoying so far.

message 121: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 282 comments Hi, I'm Chinook. I stumbled across this group by chance and it was the perfect time. I've had two girls in the last three years and I had a bit of a reading slump for a bit. Then I discovered Overdrive kindle and audiobooks and got hooked on the Pop Sugar challenge, which has made this an amazing reading year for me except... I've been slacking on classics and the list, which I've been semi-focusing on for a few years now.

I do actually read Korean, but not well enough for literature. I'm Canadian but after university I moved to Scotland for almost five years and then South Korea for ten. I live in Denver now. Since I'm Canadian I also have some French, but it's been a good long time since it's seen the sunlight, so...

I've read 113 books so far. Right now I'm confined to books that are available as ebooks, and mostly free, either as free classics or through the library because children are expensive and they have curtailed both my book budget and any reading time that lends itself to paperbacks. I'm hoping to jumpstart a better chipping away at the list this year and then to try and use a lot of list books to complete book challenges next year.

As for the Korean book - there was chatter in korea that it was going to be translated and published but I've no idea what came of that. I've been hiking in the Taebaek Mountains. And there's a movie, which is okay, so perhaps if you get to the end and it's still not translated, you can just watch the movie and go for a hike!

Hi! Welcome to the group and I hope it helps get you out of your reading slump. I pretty much stopped reading during the first two years after my daughter was born. She's 6 now and I'm bad to my usually pace but this list helped me pick up some good books.

Kate Lightowlers (kate_lightowlers) | 2 comments Hi all,

I'm Katie and I just found this group kind of by accident.

I used to love to read as a teenager; I would devour books like they were food - and I suppose in a way they were. Unfortunately that all changed when I went to Uni. I studied Creative Writing and History because that's what I was good at in school and I liked at the time but I found that being forced to read things that I didn't love and then forcing myself to write for my degrees took not only my time but my love and passion for reading.

I've only just resurfaced now on the tail end of my Masters degree (I'm about to go into a months holiday before only having a final subject left) and I've realised that I've let seven years go past since I fell out of love with reading.
I guess I'm looking to fall in love again now that I'm going to have so much more time on my hands. And I'm always looking for new material to torture my future students with. Looking forward to reading some new books and potentially making new friends.

Katie.

Welcome to the group Kate. Yes that Uni work does take it out of you. This group should help restore you to your former reading self. Any questions? Just ask and we'll help. Otherwise, hope you can join in the monthly reads, seasonal read, challenges, whatever works for you.

Ann Dank | 11 comments Hi all,

I am Ann. I’ve been lurking here for a few weeks now, so it is probably a good idea to introduce myself. I’ve been a passionate reader for as long as I can remember, but lately real life (in the shape of full-time job and kids) has been interfering with my reading. I am also an avid hiker and runner. I’ve lived most of my life in north-eastern US, but my first 16 years were spent in Moscow, Russia. This gives me a huge advantage to tackle Russian classics in originals and those long unpronounceable names actually make sense to me :)

I am really looking forward to joining monthly reads and challenges and hoping that this group will help me get out of the reading slump.

Welcome Melissa! Glad you found us from Litsy and hope you enjoy the group! We do have some pretty lively discussion (although it largely depends on the book). We are still in the midst of voting for November books. The pool is narrowed down to 3 top books (because it was a tie between the top three so we are doing a second around of voting) but you can still vote if you like.

Can't wait to start the Blind Assassin Buddy read!
