Hi Kathleen, we have many opportunities. If you would like to do the tbr challenge, you can. Just start a list for August and leave blanks the numbers already selected. We draw book numbers at the end of the month.

Welcome to the group! We look forward to having you.

I have tried working on this list before, but don't usually get very far. However, there are many I would like to read. My health and mobility have improved greatly, so I am going to give it another try.
If I can figure out how to set my page up again, I will join in on the participation points. I did find all the "chapters" for Pilgrimage, so I will try for it.

MaryAnn, so glad to see you back! Glad to hear you are feeling better. If you have any questions ask away. Please look at voting for BOTM, setting up your yearly challenge and you can still do the TBR challenge for the rest of year. So many things, hope you find something that will excite you!

Welcom Tiffiny, we welcome you and hope you find the motivation here to make progress on the list. Do you have any questions? There is a lot of opportunities. Don't be afraid to jump in. If you would like to put a TBR challenge list together, you still can. We will be picking the next number soon. Just leave blank the numbers already selected.

Welcome to the group.
Welcome to the group.

Do not worry, many of us are just starting out also. I think I am approaching 200 but 200 out of 1315 is not very much.

As it stands I'm at 87 only! I thought it would be more somehow... a lot of work left to be done :-)
I work as manager in a hospital and am a musical student (went back to uni this year at the age of 36). So I work parttime and study parttime, but mostly spend a LOT of time on trains going between all those places I need to be and home. On the train is where I get most of my reading done.
I'm looking forward to reading many classics with you all!

Welcome Jessica. We have a lot of opportunities that help with making those decisions on which book to read. Especially check on the 2020 plans and if you have questions, please ask. We are voting for February books to read if you want to check that topic out too.

Welcome Jessica. We look forward to having you in our group.

As life has become more complicated, I've found myself reading more books just for fun, including children's books, and fewer books that take lots of effort. I've also started reading a lot more non-fiction, and I'm still slowly working on reading more Pulitzers, both fiction and non-fiction.
I have really enjoyed the conversations and 1001 books, though, especially when there are questions and answer discussions. I always check to see if I'm able to fit the current choices into my schedule (and/or can get them quickly from the library), and I haven't much lately. I hope to read and participate more in 2020.

Me too. Thanks, Diane. I've got a copy of The Leaves are Singing, and maybe I'll get to it. I see there are questions, and I hope to get involved.

I was wondering if this was the Connie that was with us in the past. Welcome back. It is so true, our reading goes through life changes as we do ourselves. Hopefully you will find more time to read with us this year. No matter, pop in when you can. Read what you enjoy, and just enjoy reading!! Happy New Year of reading.

Welcome Jessica, Jessica and Connie.
Sorry for the delay in replying I missed your posts initially. My GR tends to be a bit glitchy and I don't always get the notifications I should.
Looking forward to book chat with all of you.

Hi all! I'm not exactly new here, but I'm making a comeback after a 2+ years hiatus from the group.
I took some distance during that time for a few reasons: first, I felt that I was getting busier at work, and it got worse, thanks to the gradual legalisation of online sports betting in the US; second, I wanted to reach my goal of "500 before 50", which I reached with about three weeks left to the deadline; the goal had many constraints around the authors I wanted to read, which meant that I couldn't really participate fully in the context of the group; thirdly and finally, I wanted to read The Taebaek Mountains, which I knew could never be a challenge in this group as it is not available in English; I finished it last week and I'll post a review in the coming days (although I noticed that somebody beat me to it :) ).
Despite all the COVID shenanigans, I am still quite busy with work, but I will try to rejoin gradually the activities of the group. I should be able to read Razor's Edge in May and I'm waiting for the delivery of Amok and The Flamethrowers to "catch up" on your previous BOTMs. I will prepare a TBR list (omitting the numbers already drawn) and I will need a "random miser" list (please Bookworm). I'm not planning to go through the yearly and seasonal reads at this stage, I'm craving shorter stuff after this Korean marathon!
For the more recent members, a bit about myself: I am based in the north-west suburbs of Sydney, Australia. I know Kristel since 2012 when I joined the defunct Shelfari group and contributed to a few challenges here (seasoned members will remember my twelve Labors of Hercules). I work as a quant, developing statistical models for the pricing of sports betting markets. I normally travel a lot, for work and for leisure, but that will be put on hold for sometime. I am fluent in English and French, currently at intermediate level in Mandarin (Chinese) and have no problems reading restaurant menus in Swedish.

Welcome Back Patrick!! We've missed you. Congratulations on your achievements. Yes, you got beat in reading Taebaek Mountain, but you read a translation and the one that beat you, did her own translating. Both quite accomplished readers!

I was never on the shelfari group: I would love to know what this was- sounds harrowing lol.
And nice to meet you Patrick! I'm the other person who read Taebaek Mountains, so I'm looking forward to your review :)
Thanks all for the welcome back words! I'll do my best to behave myself (hehe) and contribute as often as my busy schedule permits.

The old Shelfari was another Amazon creature, which received as little support as possible from Amazon. Which meant that there were several outages and lots of glitches, especially towards the end of its useful life. There were a few good features (e.g. the possibility to create sub-threads within a discussion thread) which we missed greatly when we migrated here after Amazon shut down the site. The migration was a mixed experience depending on your luck; a lot of people lost lots of content from their old accounts, others were able to migrate all their data here without too many problems.

Welcome back Patrick I will generate your random miser list shortly. I am in awe of your language abilities I am trying to learn Spanish currently and while I am not ready to read a novel yet I could probably work my way around a meal out LOL

Shelfari was a great platform for book discussion. I still miss the good old days. The biggest benefit was the ability to have I guess you would call them sub threads within a thread. So our BOTM questions we could post each question separately in the thread and people could choose which to answer by replying to the individual question if you can picture that. It was so much easier to track responses and I really feel it encouraged more discussion about each individual question.
That said we make the best we can of GR grumble grumble LOL

Welcome Star Geek. I had the Boxall book for a couple years before I learned there were Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ groups reading/discussing books from it.

Welcome to the group. Now that you have had time to look around, do you have any questions? It's not to late to put a TBR list together, request a random list. Join in a monthly read.
Books will be posted on the 15 for voting for the October BOTM.
We hope you find a home here at Reading 1001.

Welcome Star Geek we look forward to discussing books with you any questions just ask we are a friendly group

Its a daunting list and I like the idea of separating out a group of books that I can start with. Are there such 'sub lists' already prepared? Suggestions on where to start other than randomly opening to a page?

Hi Star Geek, welcome to the group. Why don't you start with reading Book of the Month then you can decide which challenges to participate in. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the idea -- I just ordered the Human Stain by Philip Roth (which is one of the books of the month) , Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd, and Contact by Carl Sagan. All three are on Boxall's.

I think the BOTM is a good suggestion. I think I started with authors I knew I liked, and branched out from there.

I also agree that starting with a BOTM is a good place to start. We are a small group so it isn't as hard to assimilate. You really don't have to say much but it is nice to say a little even if it is to say. I read the book and liked it or I didn't like it. A second good place to start if you want a short list to work from is to ask Bookworm for a randomized list. Then you have a few suggestions of places to start.
The group breaks down the list by name of author rather than date so that not all books are from the same years. It gives more variety that way. We also break out the long books and do them as longer reads. We vote on around 50 books per month for BOTM options.
