Cassandra | 5832 comments THE DEWEY DECIMAL CHALLENGE (non-fiction)
Duration: January 1, 2017 December 31, 2017

The Dewey Decimal System is the way libraries organize their non-fiction books. It was created in 1876 by Melvil Dewey and has been changed much throughout the years.
The goal of this challenge is to read as many books with different (general) Dewey decimal classes as possible. For the purpose of this challenge, we’ll split the Dewey Decimal System into 100s, for a total of 10 larger categories. More in depth information on classes of the Dewey Decimal System can be found here: .

If you're unsure which category a book falls into, you can or ask.

Cassandra | 5832 comments How to Participate
1. Post here telling the challenge leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.

Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the challenge leader knows to go look at your original post. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

For more information about how challenges work, check out this thread or ask your challenge leader.

Lindsay | 1337 comments THE DEWEY DECIMAL CHALLENGE (non-fiction)
Duration: January 1, 2017 December 1, 2017

The Dewey Decimal System is the way libraries organize their non-fiction books. It was created in 1876 by Melvil Dewey and has been changed much throughout the years.
The goal of this challenge is to read as many books with different (general) Dewey decimal classes as possible. For the purpose of this challenge, we’ll split the Dewey Decimal System into 100s, for a total of 10 larger categories. More in depth information on classes of the Dewey Decimal System can be found here: List of Dewey Decimal Classes.

If you're unsure which category a book falls into, you can use this website or ask.

Adriana | 3888 comments I'm usually bad with yearly challenges but this part of overall goal in 2017 to explore more books and genres outside of what I read so I'm going for all ten. I'll plan and put the books I'm reading here soon.

message 40: by Cassandra (last edited Dec 04, 2016 03:08PM) (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments I'm pretty bad with yearly challenges too, Adriana - but that doesn't stop me from signing up. :) Hope we both have better luck this year!

message 42: by Cassandra (last edited Dec 05, 2016 09:44AM) (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hi Kristin! There are definitely non-fiction books in the 800s category. For example, I'm planning to read On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King, which is a memoir about literature.

I'm also fine if you want to find a collection of literature you wouldn't normally read, something like The Best American Short Stories 2016, or an old classic like The Odyssey.

Find what make sense for you!

Adriana, I changed your goal. Good luck!
