As always, this challenge restricted books added to TBR prior to the year it's being played so books must be on TBR prior to 1 January 2018.



Look to your right as we will be using "True Random Number Generator".
Change the Min number to "10"
Change the Max number to "269"

The last digit will be the year ending with said digit that book was first published. The first 2 digits (could be only 1 digit) will be author's initial.

For your level in participation, we will be each be looking at our own TBR number and adding it to either double or single digit (your preference).

You're free to either take the number of your TBR now or revise it when Jan 1 arrives & it's a lower number. Or just do the number of your TBR when you start participating in the challenge (after Jan 1, 2018).

Of course, you're more than welcome to do any number you'd like. This is just a guidance if you'd need one :)

Rule of Thumb:
If you can't fit the numbers/criterias with your TBR, scratch that number and generate an extra one. The goal is to reduce the number of your TBR, not to add any nor to read books that aren't on your TBR in the first place.

For example

So, my very first planned book. I did not have an initial Z author who published a book on my TBR in 2005. I did have a Z author who had a 2005 book, but it was #3 in a series I have not read. So I added one, which is allowed since it is before 1/1/18.

However, what if this occurs after the first of the year? How is that handled then?

Similar to Bea's question, I'm also wondering, for those difficult letters like Z, Q, X, if we have no authors with those initials can we look for the letter elsewhere in the name? Or if we have no exact matches, should we generate a different number? In a challenge designed to help me tackle my existing TBR, I certainly don't want to add books only to fit the challenge....

I do not use the Want to Read list in GR, so I have to come up with what I am going to use as a TBR, as I have several. I would use the "to read mine" list, but that adds to 2, which is way to easy. So I think I will combine some of my lists to come up with a number. I'll be back to post the results.

So - I added up a bunch of my TBR and Planned lists and came up with 1880, which adds to 17 or 8. I am going to start with 8 and if I finish them soon enough, I will expand to 17.
But as I read this, I could read books published in 2018 as long as they are on my TBR by December31, 2017?

Do not add books to your TBR just for this challenge. That will defeat the purpose of this challenge lol

Lauren, whilst you could use your TBR number of 46 to generate your goal (4 + 6 =) 10, it might be rather difficult for you to find books to fit criteria of generated numbers...

You are most than welcome to try and as I said above, if you can't fit the numbers/criterias with your TBR, scratch that number and generate an extra one.

well, that was harder than it seemed! being iBooks purchases means that there are a lot of newer releases and so some of the combinations gave me nothing! had to redo a lot of my random numbers

I am tempted to delete the book I added for Z and scrap the random number, but...it would be a new Z author for me...and the rules allow me to add prior to 1/1/18...so I think I will keep it for now.

However, if I get to repeat MM or go for my bigger number, I will most definitely scrap any random number that can't be met by my TBRs.

LOL, agree! I also had to redo a lot of random numbers, specially the vowels I, O, U.

But I really liked the combination of books that it turned out - lots of books in there that have been languishing in my TBR for years. Some combinations which I thought I would have lots of books available like T7, I only ended up having one book, while others which I thought would be more rare like W2, ended up having tons!

This isn't going to be one of my "official" goals for 2018, but I have picked a list so we'll see how we go.

So, I finally checked my two library systems for book availability for my plan in Post #10. Since Aiken SC is closest to me, I wanted to focus on books available there as primary. Here is my attempt to limit my choices to a few (or fewer):

Available at GA Library (and oldest on TBR of choices): Ghosts

3. Available at Aiken library (and oldest on TBR of choices): The Gift of Rain - also previously planned for another group's challenge

5. Available at Aiken library and previously planned for PAS Moving Mountains 2017 challenge: The Devil Colony

#5 is not the oldest on the TBR to match the task criteria...it misses that distinction by 2 weeks. However, the oldest book The Angels Are Here is not within either library system and would need to be searched through interlibrary loan. For this challenge, I am not willing to do that since I have other options.

So, items 2 and 4 still have choices to be made. The other three are determined and available.

Wow, Bea... I had 3 library cards (3 different networks/councils) but I decided that it was just too much trying to keep track which book belong to which library so I'm sticking to just one now... not the one closest to home either but one that doesn't impose fines as long as you return the books ;p

Sign me up!

One question, if we finish the participation level that our TBR gives us, can we do the challenge again? Mind you, I'm asking this question before I have even calculated my level or seen what any kind of plan would look like, so the question may become moot once I start doing the maths ;-)
