Oh no. I live in the Pacific Northwest and we do not have seasons. It's cold wet and miserable most of the time at varying temperatures. The average temp and rainfall in Seattle is almost exactly the same in Vancouver and it doesn't vary more than 20-25 degrees between seasons. We get sun in summer but most days it's also cloudy or only cloudy. The average in August between the highs and lows is like 63. We're almost never cold enough to snow averaging 43 degrees between highs and lows in January.

Where in Canada do you live? I lived near Toronto for a year and a half and we had seasons. I think it's mostly the middle of the continent that has seasons in Canada.

message 105: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments I lived in Toronto many years ago and there were definitely distinct seasons!
I hate the cold, though so I moved back to Australia - couldn’t stay there long term 😊
In saying that I also lived in Thailand and I loved it but needed a change from essentially the same weather year round.
Although Sydney is mild in terms of winter when compared to the northern hemisphere I do feel like we notice the season changes and we are very lucky with blue skies almost year round.
It’s just days like yesterday when you get past 40c that it is just ugly and no one wants to be outside in that!!

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments About 26 hours until Uno begins!

As a reminder, only books started AFTER the challenge commences can be used

message 107: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments and we have begun! Happy 2025 UNO!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments Happy reading, everyone.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments Woohoo!

Just finished a pre-UNO book, and about to start on my first 😁

message 110: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Happy reading!

Now to pick what I'm starting with...

message 111: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments For the colored cards, we only need one person to read that, right? Because I'm reading a green 3 that I'll finish tomorrow but someone else has claimed it.

message 112: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments Yes, we only need one of each, and a WD4 duplicates one of them.

message 113: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I can remove my green 3 and read something else.

message 114: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments If yours has lots of qualifications and you want to read it, we can both read ours and the captains can use whichever. Mine fits for three categories I think. I wasn't looking for one, I just decided to read a book that happened to fit.

message 115: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments It's alright, I have plenty of stuff to read. I'll save it in case we need it next month.

message 116: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments I started a book for my RL book club and it is excrutiating. I'm actually having a visceral reaction at trying to read another word, so I'm dumping it and moving on

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments On the team spreadsheet, where do I put that I read the green 3? I see the space that says that but the surrounding cells are either full or could belong to another colored card. Do I color the relevant cells of my entry green?

Also, if an author uses a pseudonym and both names are on the cover, can we use both? If not, which should we use?

Thanks!

message 118: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments Yes just colour the cell in green :)

With the author, it is whatever the main (first) author that is listed on goodreads

message 119: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments Does that include a book that has two different authors?

I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions.

message 120: by Tina (new)

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 283 comments Yes, if two authors are listed, you can use either. We will check your book (and the authors listed) before we add it to the official spreadsheet

And questions are good! Keep them coming :) We're happy to help

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments OMG OMG!!! Here's something the Aussies on the team will know what I'm talking about...

Just went shopping, and found TIM TAMS!!! in my local supermarket!! An Aussie friend of mine used to send me regular packages of them, but we lost touch about 10 years ago, and I have seriously missed them.

Only 2 flavours at the moment (original and caramel), but I have everything crossed that they will prove popular and prompt an influx of all the deliciousness sooner or later 😆

*happy dance*

message 122: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments My sister sent me some Tim Tams once. SOOOOO good!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments One of our secret weapons! Many different seasonal flavours come and go but the caramel is particularly good.

And you have to try the Tim Tam Slam! (Biting of either end then slurping your coffee through the Tim Tam. Chocolate bliss. 😍

message 124: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I remember a chololate and strawberry or raspberry one that was particularly good. 😁
I have everything crossed they'll get the dark chocolate in.

And I have done the Tim Tam Slam! Only with hot chocolate, as I don't drink coffee.

message 125: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments Got to say though... They've shrunk substantially since I last had some!

Whenever my husband travels back to Australia, he get Tim Tams and Red Frogs for the kids. lol

message 127: by Jonnie (new)

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments I do have a stupid question. For the 2nd tab on our tracking sheet READ february. Is that past tense, like only fill out when completed? Or present tense like what I am crurrently reading?

Also Row 10 column D, what does shelf checked mean? Is that for somone to verify its on our shelf?

message 128: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Odd as it may seem, we have Tim Tams in Hawaii! Not at every grocery store, but at several. I’ve tried a bunch of different ones, but I always come back to plain ol milk chocolate

On a reading note, I finished my last January book! I am a serial book starter & started a whole bunch of books especially for UNO!! Since February is for romance, I plan to lean heavily into rom coms this month.
Hope everyone is having fun and reading some good ones!

No such thing as a stupid question!

That tab looks to me like it is for our wonderful captains to use to keep track of where they have assigned our books once we've finished them. My plan is to just fill in the details on the 1st tab.

Checked is their way of saying that one of the 2 of them has checked it's on our shelves, meets the requirements for Uno and works for the letter we say it does.

message 130: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments I've never had a timtam. Might have to see if I can find some to try. Which supermarket is worth a look Sammy (if it was a national chain)?

I've got a couple of things on the go. In keeping with my goal for the year, they are both from my TBR shelf! I'll manage to keep that up until the mini challenges roll in, then it'll be more of a free for all.

message 131: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments Yes sorry I created the “read tab for me and Tina so we can move books there when we check them and put them on the official sheet. You can ignore it. 😊
Work got crazy and I ran out of time to post here about it

Sainsbury's!

It's basically like a Penguin, only better!

message 134: by Tina (new)

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 283 comments So happy you found some Tim Tams Sammy! I agree that the caramel ones are super delicious. At one point, I would only buy the double-coated chocolate Tim Tams... so good! When I buy Tim Tams, I have to buy one for myself and one for my partner so he doesn't eat mine. His are gone in two days and mine last longer.

They have got smaller and more expensive which I am still emotionally recovering from

message 135: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments On Amazon they're about US$8.50. A bit much for me. How much are they in Australia?

message 136: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments £2.50 from Sainsbury's so can definitely give them a go. Got the original or the caramel as options.

message 137: by Kelly (Maybedog) (last edited Feb 03, 2025 12:05PM) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments Is there a limit to how many books I can read? I way underestimated because when I signed up, it didn't occur to me that I could use every book I read including ones I'm reading for challenges in other groups. I also was more depressed than usual and reading less. I'm back to around one a day. But that could change again.

There's no individual limit, but we have a limited number of cards per month so we try not to be in a situation where everyone is over reading and then twiddling our thumbs for 2 weeks ;)
If I know I will read more, I generally start pulling out larger books.

If you are going to read more this month and someone else wouldn't mind the pressure off and wants to read less than that can also work ;)
(for eg. I have a chunkster to read so if I don't read to my sign-up because you read additional that is ok with me)

message 141: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Feb 04, 2025 12:18AM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments I flew into Kingscliff today which is lovely

The most annoying part is that Queensland doesn't have daylight savings time, and New South Wales does. So I have to fly into Qld and then come back over the border to Kingsliff and the clock goes back and forth. It did my head in this afternoon trying to tell someone what time I would get here!! haha

Here facilitating workshops for a sales conference and then back home Friday

So we can only go through them once. Got it. But since we get the same number of points no matter how long the books is or what card it is, if every team reads the full set of hands, don't they end up with the same score?

I'll read my normal amount for a couple of weeks, checking every couple of days and if we're going too fast I won't list every book I read. Sometimes I'll read books that don't fit a lot of spaces because I'm doing other challenges. I'm sure we can go back and add them in if we need them as long as I read them this month.

message 143: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments Every team has different cards so our potential points are always different team by team.
Plus mini challenges run the last two weeks as a way to get extra points each month ;)

message 145: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments Dang! I'm a 7/V short of a full house with my latest book! How vexing!😆

Also, I'm having much fun re-watching Firefly at the moment. Limiting myself to one episode a day, which isn't easy!
Looking forward to tomorrow though, because that's Jaynestown day! 😁

message 146: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments lol always fun to get a full house ;)

Oh nice one! I will need to do that when I am home.

I fly back today. As nice as it has been to walk along the beach and watch the sunrise every day I do miss my family and my own home. Plus I've been working from about 7.30am until 7.30pm every day so being home makes me stop and do 'mum stuff'. 😂

message 147: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Feb 08, 2025 04:12PM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments I finished my blue book
How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

I liked the concept of this book - but there was just something that fell a bit flat with this one and I found it hard to stay engaged with the story. On reflection I think there just wasn't enough of a "point" to the book.

--edit-- I can't actually use it for a blue card after all as the character I thought would work ends up being a fake name the main character takes on in one of the time periods and isn't actually his character name

message 148: by Jonnie (new)

Jonnie Deitz | 181 comments I will be updating my completed books tomorrow. My husband and I have been on vacation the last few days to celebrate his birthday and our anniversary.

message 149: by Kelly (Maybedog) (new)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments Which blue number was that? So we still need that card?

message 150: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments It was for a wild draw 4, so we can put other coloured cards against it - I think we have a few duplicates on the tracking sheet so I’m sure it will be covered but I will double check at the end of this weekend and give everyone an update :)
