Hi Team!
I wanted to get the post for the master list near the top of this page so it would be easy to find. I'm looking forward to a great round. These challenges guide me to read out of my usual go to zone and sometimes a new genre may stick.

I don't mind serving as Team Captain. However, I work long hours and may not be available to post at the time of the shelf announcements. Also I suffer from Zombie brain and must be forgiven of typo/format errors on occasion.

I have picked my Free Space Book and it will be my allowed re-read for this round of bingo. It is the first book of a duology and I want to read the 2nd book during the round, but read book 1 back in 2021 and need a refresher on the plot.

Hi, I work in SoCal and spend most of my time there. I did spend one summer in Shelburne, VT while working in Middlebury, VT. It was too cold for me. When labor day came around I went back south. Snow is fun for a few days for skiing or boarding - as long as I am not shoveling.

That sounds awful. It is only 52 and I have been under the heater all morning!!! I am looking forward to Sunday when it will be a nice 74 and Sunny :)

How it Fits: 'Valentine' in the title - Viviana Valentine Gets Her Man
Review: Viviana Valentine is secretary to PI Tommy Fortuna. They get a case from Tallmadge Blackstone to tail his daughter and find out why she doesn't want to marry his business partner (intended bride 18, intended groom 65). Tommy starts and then disappears leaving Viv to cover the office. She takes up the investigation in her own way eventually including her boarding house mates. It is set in 1950 and is filled with NYC slang, 50s dialogue and characters. I loved all the side characters. Viv is one smart cookie. Definitely will be looking for more in this series.

It's been so long since I've started this series. I'm still enjoying learning more about Zoey and her friends. The world and all the Vamp lore is interesting. The one thing I don't like much is how boy crazy Zoey is but this is YA so you kind of expect it. I'm still planning to continue the series.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
Date Read: 28Feb, 2025
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
Review:
Hex Hall is a great YA story by Rachel Hawkins. I have enjoyed other books by this author and the title caught my attention. Sophie Mercer lives with her mother-just the two of them. She is aware of her warlock father whom she has never met. Sophie’s mother is not a supernatural. Sophie learned she is a witch just three years before attempting a spell that goes terribly wrong. She has had no formal training and found herself in the spotlight after this mishap. Her father passed punishment on her resulting in her attendance at Hex Hall, a reform school for misguided supernatural/gifted children. Sophie’s time at Hex Hall is full of teenage angst with a supernatural twist including mystery and murder. I enjoyed this book and will continue the series.

Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
Date Read: 28Feb, 2025
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
Review:
I love the stories of Charles and Anna, the detailed world Patricia Briggs has constructed as Mercy Thompson’s world, and the action-packed mysteries the characters are engaged in. Charles Cornick is the enforcer for his father’s pack, The North American Ware wolves. Charles has magic from both his mother and his father making him different from the others. Anna is different in her own way as she is an Omega.
Charles and Anna are struggling with a new relationship, getting to know each other and coping with their own demons. Added to their burden is the task assigned to Charles to go out into the northern wilderness, find a rogue ware wolf and put an end to the killing going on there. The adventure assigned to them and unfolding of their relationship is a captivating story I will continue to revisit many times.

Review: During an incident in the coffee shop where Belle Jamison works a fleeing scientist puts an experimental drug in her mocha latte. Strange things begin to happen including her making fire, rain and wind that she can’t control. Two groups of people want to capture, experiment, test and control her. One government agent says he will protect her. Who is really telling the truth and can they find the scientist to see if there is an antidote. This sounds like a great paranormal plot and about half way through the book it begins to live up to its potential.
However, getting past the first half where the FMC is one obnoxious character is daunting. This is a reread because I did not write a review the first time. I am now going back to several reads and filling the blanks. In this case I think I skimmed a bit of the beginning to get to the good parts. A complete read does not change my feeling on the book but did fill in some of the backstory. I have the second book in the duology, so I want to read it while this is fresh and the main character is more agreeable.

Review
Arletta is a human baker in her small town. In this world humans are considered magicless and looked down upon. She had dreams of one day opening up a bakery, but many obstacles stand in her way. I loved the characters and the friendships they made. I didn't really care for the romance part but overall enjoyed the story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Review: Arokh, a Rakhii gladiator, is on a slave market planet looking for his sister who was abducted, when he hears the scream of a Gryfala Princess. He recognizes the sound because he has worked on that planet as security for the Princesses. He goes into protection mode, rescues her and takes her on his hunt for his sister.
The best part of the book is this part where they cannot understand each other and the things that they do to try to communicate. While she is learning about these space worlds, he is trying to figure out why she looks like a Gryfala but doesn’t know their language and acts differently.
Arokh's protection becomes more possessive as they get closer, and the story tries to justify her acceptance of this new restrictive culture while trying to portray her as working to change what she doesn’t like. It doesn’t work for me.
It did set up some story lines that sound more interesting, so I might see where they lead.

Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright
Date Read: 6Mar 2025
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
Review:
Feral Sins has popped up as a recommended read for some time now, so I was optimistic about reading. Suzanne Wright didn’t disappoint. Taryn Warner, is a single wolf shifter who hasn’t shifted. That is her second flaw from her alpha father’s perspective. Her first simply being a female. Her mother is dead and her father has no concern for her other than using her as a bargaining tool to use to make an alliance. Taryn no tool and she is making a plan to escape. Trey Coleman, the alpha from a nearby pack has different plans for Taryn. After some discussion and feeling backed in a corner with no options. Taryn puts all her trust in a stranger and agrees to Trey’s proposal. Neither Trey nor Taryn could have predicted what came next.
Feral Sins held my attention with a mix of compelling and cliché characters, action packed storyline with some mystery woven in. The satisfying conclusion hooked me into the next in the series.
