Cee | 180 comments Finished my supernatural book: Watcher in the Woods (Dreamhouse Kings, #2) by Robert Liparulo . I give it 2 stars.

I'm giving up on this series. It's not grabbing my interest, and the ongoing cliffhanger is annoying the crap out of me. I don't like series that don't give even a small resolution at the end of the book.

The Watcher in the Woods is rather cruel for a young-adult book. The children in this book are 12 and 15, implying that the story is written for a teenage audience. However, there is so much death and war and hardship, I wouldn't recommend this for your son or daughter.

Hoping my Demon read turns out better (:

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments You guys are fast! I am trying to decide between two books I own, but wouldn't likely get to if it weren't for this bingo:

Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine A Rush of Wings (The Maker's Song, #1) by Adrian Phoenix

I need to read this book -- I keep hearing great things!

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I finished my demon shelf book a few days ago (see above posts), but here is the review.

Hell Fire (Corine Solomon, #2) by Ann Aguirre 3 stars

Hell Fire by Ann Aguirre, #2 in Corrine Solomon series
I really like Ann Aguirre’s writing style. I enjoy the worlds she creates and the characters that inhabit those worlds. I really do like a lot about this book, this series but for some reason this book and this series does not click with me. I cannot figure out why. Maybe a list will help.

What I love about this book (and this series):

1. The setting. In Hell Fire the setting is a small remote town in the middle of a forest, literally it is surrounded by forest on a sides, in Georgia. The town is a character in the book, not just a location. It is very creepy, a scary place to be and Aguirre writes it well.

2. The side characters. I don’t mean the supporting cast, but the people the main characters run into on the street, at the library, etc. These side characters are funny, scary and add to the story.

3. The supporting case, like in Sirantha Jax, Corrinne is surrounded by a group of unusual but interesting people with their own agenda, but who gather together to fight for a specific battle. She does this well and I liked these people a lot.

4. The storyline scary and surprising.

5. The talent/superpowers very unique and creative. Not a copy of other urban fantasy books and there are huge costs to each of the powers. Well done.

What I don’t like about this book (and the series):

1. The throw in romance. It is not believable, the characters just don’t seem to sync, I don’t care enough about them as a couple and this storyline is so poorly done it is just a distraction from the main story.

2. The love triangle. See above.

3. The main character’s temper tantrums. Over the top, not consistent with her character. I can’t imagine friends and lovers putting up with this stuff.
I am not sure if I will read #3. It took move 15 months to move on to #2 in this series.

Love triangle? Blah. LOL! I'm not a big fan, only if they are done well and most aren't. I always end up rootin' for the "wrong" dude anyway. ;)

Hope everyone's having a great week!

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments So if we get our supernatural stamp or our demon stamp we will have 3 in a row. Soooo...... how are we all doing on our books? *grin*?

For my supernatural shelf, I am reading I am reading Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine and really really enjoying it! I have had this book since March 2010, lol -- I can't believe I waited that long. I am in about 40% and can't wait to read some more.

message 410: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Just to update, I finished my demon book and reviewed it a little bit ago. :)

So once we get our supernatural stamp -- we need to cross our fingers and toes that speculative fiction and trilogy are the shelves that are pulled! And once we get our demon stamp we need to do the same for "futurists" and "male author". Those are the last two shelves for the rows where we WILL have 3 stamps. :)

Amanda A | 812 comments The Darkest Pleasure (Lords of the Underworld, #3) by Gena Showalter
Demons shelf
Finished 9/8
4

I was really looking forward to this book and it proved to be another marvelous installment in the Lord of the Underworld series. Reyes is possessed by the demon of Pain and has desired Danika from the beginning. Reyes' demon forces him to inflict painful injury upon himself to avoid inflicting it on others and he cannot feel any pleasure without it. Reyes and Danika are an engaging couple and after the anticipation of their union had built up over the course of the first two books, it was wonderful to see them finally get their HEA.

The Lords are also still fending off attacks from the Hunters and searching for the artifacts that can lead them to Pandora's box. I was a little surprised at who the leader of the Hunters was when revealed. I liked learning a little more about Sabin, Keeper of Doubt, and look forward to reading his story next in The Darkest Whisper.

Steph (angel4492) | 32584 comments One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress, #6) by Jeaniene Frost

Shelf: supernatural
Read: 06 Sept
Rating: ★★★☆ (to add ½ or not? Dunno.)
Review: I have been a fan of Cat & Bones since Cat was introduced to us in 2007. And, that dedication had always been rewarded with kick-ass battles, smokin' hot Bones and wild vamp chaos. Over the course of this series we have seen Cat try to stake Bones, Bones try to seduce Cat, Cat bail on Bones, Cat and Bones' hot matin' (AKA: Chapter 32), Cat stalked by Ex, Cat-fights, Bone-crushing love, and now ... ghosts?

I am the first to tell ya that the story itself was a decent read. But, I go into my favorite series reads expecting certain things and when one of the installments in that series doesn't have those "things", I get discombobulated. I don't know that to think, much less how to rate it.

There were some NH-bits that I enjoyed ~ Ian's quips, Tyler lustin' after Ian, tiny glimpses of Spade and Denise. But, overall, just not very NH'y. So, my rating is lower than it would be had this book been a stand-alone or part of some ghost-hunter paramystery series.

Shadowflame (Shadow World, #2) by Dianne Sylvan Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter, #4) by Nalini Singh Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent

Ill Wind by Rachel Caine
4 stars Finished 9/9

This book surprised me. I have owned it for about 15 months and was resistant to read it. But this was everything I like about urban fantasy. A strong female, unusual powers, unique world creation, a baddie that is hard to figure out until the end, and hot interesting men peppered throughout. There were funny scenes, self critical moments where the heroine re-evaluates herself, and just really good action scenes. Great book, not fantastic. I will definitely read #2.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Still reading Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne for Demons
and The Accidental Werewolf (Accidental Friends, #1) by Dakota Cassidy for supernatural.

I've been having a lot of trouble reading lately. I usually read between 15 - 25 books in a month, with a little extra in the winter months. But so far I've only finished 1 book in September and it was started in August. I've started and put down various others. I just can't seem to stick with it. So not me! Don't worry though, I'm nearly through with hounded and mid-way through Werewolf. I'm going to buckle down this week and finish them, promise. At this moment I'm planning on Storm's Heart (Elder Races, #2) by Thea Harrison for fantasy paranormal. I loved the first book, so maybe this will help me out of my mood. And I know it's me not the books. When I can force myself to stay with it, Hounded is actually quite funny.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Amanda A | 812 comments Kitty Raises Hell (Kitty Norville, #6) by Carrie Vaughn
Shelf: supernatural
Finished 9/11
4

Kitty Raises Hell is the sixth book of the series and continues the story from the previous book. Kitty is back home in Denver with her new husband Ben and her pack. The only problem is a demon sent by the Band of Tiamat that first confronted them in Vegas followed her home. With some help from the cast of a paranormal investigation tv show and the listeners of her radio show, Kitty is in for the fight of her life. One thing I love about Kitty is her wry sense of humor even when facing such challenges and that is better than ever in this book. I also enjoy her interactions with Ben and the fact that they can have a somewhat normal, stable relationship given what they are constantly facing. With a lot of action and suspense, the story moves at a fast pace that kept me turning the pages instead of putting it down. Looking forward to continuing the series with Kitty's House of Horrors.

Cee | 180 comments Hi guys, sorry I haven't been in touch lately. Started at university with my Engineering study which has taken a lot more time than I thought.

However, I had a sick day today, allowing me to finish my book! (:

I have been trying for weeks to finish Queen of the Damned, but it's just not happening. So, I'm switching my 4-stars read to Ascendant, which I actually DID enjoy!

I give Ascendant 5 stars.
I looove this series. Ms Peterfreund has created a world I have been waiting for since I was little it has, Killer Unicorns. I am still amazed by her utter brilliance for inventing them, and her ability to write an actual good story around them. Ascendant is a lot more grown up than the first part of the series, Rampant, but I was glad for the change. If Ascendant didn't have this kind of darker and more philosophical undertone it would have felt like more of the same.

I hope Ms Peterfreund will hurry up with writing a Killer Unicorns part 3! In the meanwhile I will just have to read part 1 and 2 again and again....

Hope you guys are having a great week and are reading very cool awesome books (:
