Notes:
(1) "A threadbare sofa, an old armchair, and a rickety table stood grouped together in a pool of dim light cast by a candle-filled lamp."
- How vampire-chic.
- Snape's house could use a woman's touch.
(2) "In her fury [Bellatrix] looked slightly mad."
- I guess she's always in her "fury" then.
(3) I never hear of wizard divorces... perhaps they make unbreakable vows?

Notes:
(1) '"Snape!" ejaculated Slughorn, who looked the most shaken, pale
and sweating. "Snape! I taught him! I thought I knew him!"'
- I sincerely hope that "ejaculated" means something different in British English.
(2) Fleur snatches ointment from Molly and takes over dabbing Bill. Ah, the symbolic passing of the ointment.
(3) Six down, one to go. I'll see you next book!

Notes:
(1) Kicking another wizard's wand must be akin to spitting in their face. At least Snape didn't snap Harry's in half.
(2) Gee, I haven't heard of the Hand of Glory since Book Two. That's a deep call back.
(3) Fleur: "You thought I would not weesh to marry him? ... What do I care how he looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk!
- Haha! Nice one, Fleur.

Notes:
(1) On one hand, Harry should be less repetitive with spells. Petrificus Totalus over and over gets boring. On the other hand, if it works, why change?
(2) '"DON’T " screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman ... "CALL ME COWARD!"'
- A regular Marty McFly right there: "Nobody. Calls me. Chicken!"
(3) "I, the Half-Blood Prince!"
- Like "I, Claudius"?

(1) Amycus calls Dumbledore "Dumby." I imagine a green stick of plasticine with a horse named Pokey.
(2) Fenrir: “I wouldn’t want to miss a trip to Hogwarts ... Not when there are throats to be ripped out... Delicious, delicious.
- Can werewolves be cannibals? Or does it only count in human form?
(3) "Severus... please."
- Ah... reminds me of many a chatroom debate.

Notes:
(1) Malfoy: "He’s a double agent, you stupid old man, he isn’t working for you."
Dumbledore: "We must agree to differ on that, Draco. It so happens that I trust Professor Snape."
- I use "agree to disagree" a lot too.
(2) Malfoy: "I got the idea... from the Mudblood Granger."
Dumbledore: "Please do not use that offensive word in front of me."
- Total boss to the end.

Notes:
(1) Draco disarms Dumbledore... the significance of which is yet to be known. I love how Rowling seeds plot points in deep cuts.
(2) Dumbledore: "Killing is not nearly as easy as the innocent believe... So tell me, while we wait for your friends... how did you smuggle them in here?"
- The old "I'm going to die anyway, so tell me your plan" trick! Bond would be proud.

(1) Harry needs blood to open the archway. Luckily, he was already cut whilst fighting Inferi. Even zombies have a silver lining.
(2) '"It’s going to be all right, sir," Harry said over and over again ... "Don’t worry..."
"I am not worried, Harry," said Dumbledore, his voice a little stronger despite the freezing water. "I am with you."'
- Hits me right in the feels.

Notes:
(1) How is Harry shocked that blood magic is a thing? Voldemort was revived by his blood!
(2) Dumbldore: "You are underage and unqualified. Voldemort would never have expected a sixteen-year-old to reach this place: I think it unlikely that your powers will register compared to mine."
- So... Harry should be glad the alarm can't detect his negligible amount of magic.

Notes:
(1) Perhaps Harry's grown too used to magic. He's fine charging headlong into danger, but a short swim in cold water totally freaks him out. Who is he? Film-Ron?
(2) "Harry had long since learned that bangs and smoke were more often the marks of ineptitude than expertise."
- I wonder if he's referring to Seamus, who's gimmick is he often accidentally blows things up?

Notes:
(1) Ginny: "All Romilda Vane does is ask me if it’s true you’ve got a hippogriff tattooed across your chest ... I told her it’s a Hungarian Horntail ... Much more macho."
- Harry's already kinda got a lightning bolt tattoo, and on his face too! I'd guess that's be even more macho.
(2) "Rage and resentment fought shock and excitement."
- Fight it! Angst was so Book 5.

TMR Wow how intriguing.

Aoife - Bookish_Babbling The divorce thing could also be a "times" thing as in the 90s they were still on the rarer side even in the UK...I think 🤔
I mean the Royals divorces were major news lolz

Mrinmayi Not sure if using unbreakable vows for a wedding is a good or bad idea 🤷🏽‍♀

That's true enough. Though rare as they were, they still happened. I mean, the 1990s weren't the 1950s. It may not have been as high as today, but divorce has been statistically prevalent in the West since around the 1970s and would, you'd think, be represented among Hogwarts students to some extent.

Maybe maybe not, there was still a stigma around them in the 90s and the wizarding world is rather backwards about a lot of things 😅

Jayson Mrinmayi wrote: "Not sure if using unbreakable vows for a wedding is a good or bad idea 🤷🏽‍♀"

It would certainly make people take the whole thing more seriously... adultery would probably be eliminated entirely :)

Jayson Aoife - Bookish_Babbling wrote: "Maybe maybe not, there was still a stigma around them in the 90s and the wizarding world is rather backwards about a lot of things 😅"

I suppose, though stigma isn't the same as taboo, and wouldn't explain zero instances. Also, Henry VIII got divorced twice, so there's precedent for some modicum of acceptability in the middle ages/renaissance. Another explanation is that divorce could be illegal. That's a possibility. I'm from the Philippines, which is the only country outside of the Vatican where divorce is illegal. Rare, but as you say, wizards are rather backwards about things, and could also have adopted the custom.

Mrinmayi OMG!!! Yess!!
I think we should make the unbreakable vow IRL
Then probably people won't cheat!!
Don't know why but many people don't take adultery seriously IRL
Like its fine if they think cheating is acceptable but my problem lies when they belittle the ones who do take it seriously by calling them stubborn and unforgiving

Well, that's an easy answer. Many people don't take adultery seriously because it's not strictly illegal (though it can be taken in consideration during legal proceedings). Possibly wizards have it right :)

The Philippines is still very medieval in many ways, with regard to religion. It's a consequence of being on the other side of the world, and out of contact from, the other Catholic countries 🤷‍♂

Mrinmayi Well in India divorce is not illegal
But still looked down upon
Usually, families are involved in the marriage
So the couple is "advised " to "adjust" with each other
Definitely the reason for the divorce should be something serious like adultery or abuse
If the couple says that they are not in love with each other anymore or some excuse like this...then the families usually make the couple stay together

I'm somewhat familiar with that situation. There's a lot of Indians where I live in Canada, and I don't know any that are divorced. So, it's definitely a consequence of culture. As far as I know, among places that do allow for divorce, India's divorce rates are among the lowest in the world.

message 17: by Mrinmayi (new)

Mrinmayi You are right
Indian has the lowest divorce rates
Just 1 %
And it definitely has to do with our culture
As l said when two people get married it's not just them but even their families get connected
And it is difficult to break a family

Yeah, it's similar to that in the Philippines. The difference is that we made it law.

Tia I'm sorry for interfering but Indians have low divorce rates because of taboo attached to it. I personally kniw 2 ppl who aren't getting it because of taboo associated with it nothing about greatness of culture

message 20: by Mrinmayi (new)

Mrinmayi @Literary Escapades
That's exactly what I said
If you read "all the comments" you will know that I said exactly the same thing
People don't get divorced because of their family pressure and because divorce is usually looked down upon in India
Nowhere did anyone imply that the greatness of Indian culture is associated with the divorce rates

Jayson Literary wrote: "I'm sorry for interfering but Indians have low divorce rates because of taboo attached to it. I personally kniw 2 ppl who aren't getting it because of taboo associated with it nothing about greatne..."

Sorry if you got the wrong idea, but no value judgments were placed on Indian culture, so far as I can tell. The only possibility being that not getting divorced might be preferable to getting divorced. Which, if you believe that's a mark of cultural greatness, then good for India. But as Mrinmayi was just saying, cultural taboos have been exactly what we've been talking about.

I'm the sort of believe culture practices need to be assessed in their own contexts. So far as things have evolved to suit specific societal needs over thousands of years, I can't say that aspects of any culture are good or bad, so long as they don't result in physical or mental abuse.

The only aspect of culture I'll put a personal and comparative value judgement on is cuisine. I like to eat what I like to eat, and dislike what I dislike, culturally valuable or not :)

Personally, I thought it would be a bit tidier, considering how organized his classroom is.
