The second read-a-thon will be kicking off tomorrow (September 17) and will run until September 24. More information can be found in the announcement thread. We have a new and exciting game to announce for this read-a-thon's individual challenge!

This challenge is designed to be completed on your own. If you're looking for more a team spirit, then be sure to check out the Group Bingo Challenge and sign up for a team before the start of the read-a-thon.

If you're working on the Group Bingo Challenge and the Individual Challenge, you little go-getter, you CAN overlap your reads between the two cards. The squares are actually designed to overlap in some places. ;)




Move from START to FINISH by completing tasks. Each task determines the number of spaces you can move. Land on a special, monster space and follow the specific directions.

Zombie - He smelled you! Stand still until another member moves to distract him.
Ghost - Boo! Get "scared" back two spaces.
Witch - Get "chased" ahead three spaces.
Frankenstein - You're dead. Get brought back to life by completing a read-a-thon game.
Werewolf - There's a full moon. "Change" spaces with the member directly ahead of you (as best as you can tell).
Vampire - You're immortal. Choose the number of spaces (1-5) for your next move.

Notes:
- Identical symbols cannot be overlapped. For instance, you can't count the same 3-hour stretch as 1, 2, and 3 hours of reading. If you read for 4 hours straight (wow!) or one hour, take a break, and read three hours then you could move four spaces.
- In regards to the � tasks, if you finish any book, you can move ahead one space. If it fits in a certain category then you get bonus spaces. But those aren't cumulative (i.e. A book with a one-word title gets you two spaces, not three).
- Tasks can be completed more than once.

Please keep track of your own progress and comment in a new comment when you move spaces. That makes it easier for members when they land on a werewolf space. I will update the board and place pieces every day around 8am.

This board is amazing! When the bingo card came out I was a little disappointed with myself for not committing to the group challenge (I just wasn't sure I'd have much time to read and I didn't want to let a team down). But after seeing this I'm stoked!

I don't think I'll finish the board but I'm looking forward to try this new idea :)

I just want to check to make sure I understand the rules, for example if I borrow Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race/Margot Lee Shetterly from the library that would be one space and then I could get 2 spaces once I finish the book from either A book by a female author � OR A nonfiction book� (making that book worth 3 spaces). I could get more spaces with it though if I meet one of the time reading tasks.

Just so I understand the rules, but doesn't the monsters stop you so you can't move before either playing a game (space 2) or waiting for someone to make a move (space 3)? Or is it okay to add together all the tasks completed and then move?
Do I make any sense?

Marina - space 2 is actually a vampire. So you can choose how many spaces you want to move for reading the female author.

Woops my fault. Then I'll move 5 to space 7 and 1 to space 8 for playing the scrabble game.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. And from now on I'll wear my contacts or glasses :-)

Marina > yes I added all my spaces of the day to have my final space. No idea if it's the right thing, but in another hand if I move 1 at a time, I'll probably never succeed to jump the "2 squares" monsters as the 3 spaces are the most difficult to fill.

- Complete a Read-a-Thon game (1 space) - I played Scrabble

I'm confused about how the tasks marked with a star work. I finished The Sun Is Also a Star (indicated above as finished a book for one space), but that also fits a book by a female author, and a book by a POC. Do I get to move ahead 2 spaces since it fits those 2 categories?

Total: 7 spaces (or 9 if the book I finished can count for more than one task)

Quick question--does the hour of an audiobook have to be a straight hour, or can it be a combination? I like listening to books during my commute (which is 30 minutes each way).

Kathryn, the audiobook doesn't have to be a consecutive hour.

Rachel, a completed book can for one of the starred categories. Since your book fits one of the two point tasks, you can count it for 2 points. The two points are not in addition to the one point for finishing a book; you choose either or. So you'd have a total of 8 points.

Also, I borrowed an audiobook from the library, it was a children's book, it was a bit over an hour long and I completed it. Is that 4 spaces?

I would consider that three spaces (listen to an hour, children's book, borrowed from library). The finished books were intended to be full-length books (that's why there's the additional expansions for graphic novels/novellas/children's book).

Participated in a discussion in the A-Z folders and since I am on a vampire spot at #2, I choose to move forward 5 spaces, leaving me at space # 7.

Aw thank you so much for counting the completed ATY. And I completely understand 3 spaces for the children's audio; four seemed excessive, that's why I asked. :-)

Joan, It seems as if different members are approaching it differently. You can either do them individually and see what you land on or you can just add up a tally for the whole day and move in one big chunk.
