Amber M. McCarter (mommyultd) | 32 comments I don't have any sort of planned reading lists. I like to have a particular task(s) in mind, and then find a book to fulfill it. I mean, I can just do my usual reading, and hope it fits something (and I'll certainly do some of that too) - but it's more fun to use the tasks to help me choose those next books in the first place... But we can only do that with the color cards?

message 57: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier No we can do that with Number and letter cards as well - such as all the books I have listed above...

message 58: by Melanie (last edited Jan 22, 2020 10:38AM) (new)

Melanie (mvalente89) | 296 comments Amber, it looks like the way Judith and Nanci have it set up is that we just enter the books we read in the tracker sheet and list all options for that book and then they'll decide where to stick them in the hands.

Color cards are being claimed by specific people as they're harder to fill at random.

But my guess is once we get to the second half of the month then people will need to start claiming specific cards to make sure we complete hands. Plus the mini challenge starts mid-month which is specific challenges, so that should work with how you like to claim spots.

One option if you like to claim specific spots might be to look for stuff for the Reverse options which is where you need to read a book a teammate has read previously. It can be anything they've ever marked as read on ŷ, not just stuff read during the challenge.

Or if you look at Judith's message in comment 7 of this thread, that lists how many of each card we need so you could decide to specifically read for one of the ones we need a lot of.

message 59: by Amber M. (new)

Amber M. McCarter (mommyultd) | 32 comments I guess there is quite a bit of potential overlap amongst these requirements - chances are pretty good that most books would fulfill more than one. The Reverse card especially attracts me anyway, and it looks like we need a bunch of those :)

message 60: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier So if someone wants to enter all the books I have posted in this thread into the tracker spreadsheet, that would be very nice thanks...

Like Melanie said, I usually don't have specific sign ups for things other than the color cards and WD4 because I like having the flexibility to move things around towards the end of the month if need be.

I do try and keep that list in the top post of the count of each card remaining up to date as books get completed and logged. So if you want to target a specific card that works too.

One thing that Melanie brought up that I didn't mention was that there is a mini-challenge each month that typically comes out mid-month. These are usually task-based and fit to some sort of theme. Previous years have been holiday centered, interactive between teams, and last year was mystery based (including a chose your own adventure).

The books can be used for both the mini-challenge and the main game so it won't double the reading load.

Just a few things to remember, this game is more of a month long marathon and not a sprint. 98 books sounds like A LOT to read in one month. But you'll be surprised how quickly we may get through these cards. So make sure you enjoy your reading and don't rush :)

And books cannot be started until the game officially starts (there is a countdown in my Important Link post for those interested).

Thanks Judith.

I am too old for spread sheets. I never did like using Excel whenever I had to.

Nanci | 1864 comments Hi Team!
Sorry I’m late to the party! For some reason, I didn’t get an email for the thread and I’m not getting any of these posts. I’ll have to check my settings, as that seems to happen occasionally.

Anyway, what a great team we have with everyone chatting and helping one another! Love it! I have played UNO numerous times, as both a co-captain and captain. Last time around Judith and I worked together and it was so fun! So glad we are able to team up again! She is super organized and low-stress. You all are in for a treat with Judith as your captain!

When I get home I’ll enter some possibilities on the spreadsheet. So happy to be on this team and for the newbies, please feel free to ask questions!

I have 5 kiddos too! My oldest and youngest just recently turned 13 and 4 (my others are 10, 8, and 6)... Very much not acclimating to the idea of being the parent of a teenager lol

Maddielucy(Patti) | 217 comments Hi!! I’m new to the challenge and pretty lost, but I read a lot and am confident that I’ll be a great team member!!

Maddielucy(Patti) | 217 comments Ok I can do either (or both) 1 Blue The Obsession by Nora Roberts and/or 2 Blue Tidelands by Philippa Gregory
I tried to edit the spread sheet with other books but my phone is dying.
Happy to be here!!

message 71: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Welcome, Maddielucy! We're glad you're here! Don't worry about feeling lost. We will help you along, and please don't ever feel embarrassed about asking questions. We were all new to UNO at one point.

I put books on the spreadsheet that also work for 1blue and 2blue! It's always good to have backups in case someone doesn't get something read. Are you able to enter your books on the tracking spreadsheet? If not, let me know and I can enter them for you!

Maddielucy(Patti) | 217 comments Thanks Nanci. I put some books on the spreadsheet!!

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Sorry, I’ve been swamped today and will likely spend most of the evening getting a new phone. Mine is hardly holding a charge so before it dies a complete death, I need a replacement.

I should be able to catch up on things tomorrow!

message 74: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments No problem, Judith. My store here admitted that they purposefully make phones not to hold the charge for more than a few years, so the customers have to buy new. Mine is only 1 year old and I can already see the battery life is much worse. Seems ethically wrong to me, but they've got us over a barrel since we all need dependable phones now. Hope you enjoy your new phone!

so annoying, right! Not everyone can buy a new phone every few years. I have an iPad that's quite old. With the new system upgrades the old phones and iPads can't upgrad anymore and most of my apps including my Kindle have gone. I was so upset.

message 76: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Oh no! That's sad, Chava. I love my iPad! It's about 5 years old and I'm always telling my husband, "It's going to be a sad day for me when it dies." It still has great battery life and has been ok with the updates. I sooo don't want to buy a new one because I know it won't be as good as my old one.

message 77: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments BTW, Chava, we visited your lovely city of Melbourne during the Australian Open two years ago and loved our stay! We rented bikes with a guide and rode all over and heard about your history, etc. We spent 3 nights there and chose it over Sydney, where most Americans go.

We also went to Kangaroo Island and many other areas that are suffering from the terrible fires. I am so sorry for your country and the devastation. The loss of all your beautiful animals makes me very sad. We love your country and hope things will be better!

Sarah⭐ The Ultimate Book Hoarder (sarabellatrixx) | 69 comments Hello everyone! Sorry for the late check in, been busy at work haha. I'm Sarah and I'm from New Zealand, but I'll be moving to Melbourne in Aussie around the 15th of Feb for uni. I'll try to read, but I won't have as much time as I do now, unfortunately :( I'll try to contribute the best I can though! Looking forward to playing.

message 80: by Nanci (last edited Jan 24, 2020 08:51AM) (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Judith,
I can take the color card 1yellow. I will be reading The Rule of One. It is first in the series and was listed on the color cover page set up by the mods, so it's a definite yes. I've added it to the tracking sheet.

Maddielucy and I are both reading books for the 1blue and 2blue card, so those are covered also. If you want to give them to Maddielucy and have my 2blue book used as for the WD4 card 2, that's fine.

message 81: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Judith,
Correction...I thought my 1blue book was 1st in a series, but just looked again and it's not. I'll save it for another hand, so put Maddielucy down to read for 1blue.

I think that's red enough. Let me know how you like it, Colleen Hoover is a mixed bag for me when it comes to her books.

message 85: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Okay for the color cards, I think I have things right.

I have the following:

-Maddielucy reading for 1 Blue & 2 Blue
-Nanci reading for WD4: 3 Red & 2 Blue, 1 Yellow
-Robynne reading for 9 Green & WD4: 1 Blue
-Melanie reading for 7 Red
-Judith reading for 5 Green, 3 Red, WD4: 9 Green

That leaves one WD4 still up for grabs. We need to duplicate either 5 green, 7 red, or 1 yellow.

message 86: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Robynne, I added a bunch of the books you listed. If you end up reading others not currently on the spreadsheet for Feb, I can add them for you later.

So here's where I'm at... I used the Reverse criterium as a starting point, and then tried to figure out what else they'll work for... but what I haven't tried to look into yet is which of them would be most useful, given what has already been submitted. Here's my short list, at any rate - I can read whichever would do the most good, and will keep looking as well.

(And I never even got past your books in my browsing, Judith - so many of your 5 stars are in my reading "pile"!)

Uprooted: Reverse, Skip, 0, 3, 6 9

A Darker Shade of Magic: Reverse, Skip, 1, 6, 7, 8, 9

The Invention of Wings: Reverse, 0, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7

The Snow Child: Reverse, 0, 4, 5, 6, 8

Out of My Mind: Reverse, Skip, 0, 1, 6, 7, 9

The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Reverse, Skip, 0, 6, 8

The River of No Return: Reverse, Skip, 1, 2, 4, 9

message 88: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Haha! Yeah I read ridiculous amount of books. I saw this this list and was thinking “these are all such good reads. 🙂

Honestly my personal approach in the beginning of each month is to start ticking off the color cards I grabbed and then reading kind of whatever appeals and works for at least a couple different cards. Since in the beginning we need some of everything.

Once the mini challenge comes out, things get a bit more targeted and I plan a bit more and am more targeted with my selections.

And this is my 4th or 5th year playing UNO, most years as a captain. I’ve never not been able to find a spot for a book. So always read something that strikes your interest/makes you happy.

message 89: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments True, Amber. Judith does have a huge amount of read books, so always good to look at her list for a Reverse card. I have read a few of those too. I really loved The Invention of Wings!

Robynne Lozier Question for Judith and Nanci

I assume we will get new hands for the months of April and March. So does this mean that the letters will stay the same? ZOTHFISVEN and K&P?

Because I may not have enough new books to read to cover those letters in future months!!

And my monthly budget for buying books is not particularly large.

How do we get around this?

Robynne
