Nicolle Introduce yourself to the group...

Hi I'm Nicolle and I'm from Lancashire in England. I like to read most genres and have just started to read the classics and I'm enjoying them very much. My favourite so far being Jane Eyre.

message 2: by Martha (last edited Dec 30, 2010 11:21AM) (new)

Martha (marthas48) Jane Eyre is definitely my favorite so far, too. However, I'm reading Wuthering Heights this year and I hear it's pretty good. I'm Martha & live in central Illinois in the USA. I've read classics, mostly in my teen years & am just getting back into them and am loving them. Thanks for the invite, Nicolle!

message 3: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Martha! I am planning on reading Wuthering Heights too, maybe if more people are interested it could be a group read...

message 4: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) I think that might have been mentioned. I enjoy them, but I'm usually slower than everyone else so have to wait to read posts as I don't want to see spoilers. I'm trying to get myself down to just one or 2 books at a time, but that's hard ... I'm at 7 now. :-(

message 5: by Diana (new)

Diana | 11 comments Hi, I'm Diana! I live in the USA. My favorite calssics are The Hound of Baskervilles and Tom Saywer.

Nicolle Hi Diana and Qui!

♥ Rachel♥ (i_got_a_jar_of_dirt) | 14 comments I'm Rachel and my favorite classic? Hmm. Probably Frankenstein.

message 9: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hurrah Hurrah for Mary Shelley!

♥ Rachel♥ (i_got_a_jar_of_dirt) | 14 comments x] Yay!

message 11: by Trisha (new)

Trisha Hey Nicolle! We keep running into each other!

message 12: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Trisha! This reminds me I still need to read The Poisonwood Bible...

message 13: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Whytock Hey!
I'm Hayley, also from the UK.
Sorry for the late join Nicolle!

To be honest i've never a lot of classics. The closest to a classic, probably the Catcher in the Rye.
But hopefully this group will give me a push in the right direction!

message 14: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I've read The Catcher in the Rye and thought it was OK but not brilliant...I'd say it is a modern classic.

message 15: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Whytock Yeah, it wasn't something that kept me hooked. I read Robinson Crusoe when i was about 10 years old. That i finished in one sitting.

♥ Rachel♥ (i_got_a_jar_of_dirt) | 14 comments I didn't like Catcher too much :/
Robinson Crusoe is amazing :D

message 17: by Kjerstin (new)

Kjerstin (kjerstinkaye) | 17 comments Hey, I'm Kjerstin. I have always wanted to read classics, but I keep finding other books to read instead. This group is a perfect place to start reading the books I have been too afraid of reading!

My favorites so far are Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse , Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and especially The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde .

Almost all of the classics I've read (including my 4 favorites) are ones I was required to read for school. I love most of them, but for some reason I can't make myself read them by myself!

message 18: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Kjestin! Was Anna Kerenina good? IO've always wanted to read it.

message 19: by Kjerstin (new)

Kjerstin (kjerstinkaye) | 17 comments Yeah, Anna Karenina was really good. I definitely recommend it, but it will take some commitment!

message 20: by Mady (new)

Mady Hi! I'm Mady and I've just joined the group. I've always been interested in the classics, but somehow never got around to read that many. I want to try to read more of them this year and so finding this group was perfect!

Little Women and Alice in Wonderland are among my favourite classics :)

message 21: by Flor (new)

Flor Hi! I'm Flor and I'm from Portugal.
I joined this group after my friend Mady.
I love to read but I must confess that I don't/haven't read many classics and I hope that joining this group I can change that :-) I think this group is a perfect way to start :)
Any suggestions? :-)

message 22: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Mady and Flor! Hope this group meets to your expectations. I love Little Women too, and would suggest Jane Eyre to you Flor.

message 23: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Damian! Crime and Punishment is a door stopper! How long did it take you?

message 24: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle You make it sound so interesting, I will have to give it a go at some point. I agree about re-reading books, either it doesn't live up to your previous endevor or (the good part) you notice something new which you cannot remember at all from before and it amazes you.

message 25: by Shelia (new)

Shelia (strawberrypanic-ouran-furuba) Hi, I'm Shelia. I'm 16 and I live in Texas. I just recently became an avid reader, and I like trying out all sorts of genres. I haven't read very many classics, but Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was my favorite book as a kid.

message 26: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Shelia, hopefully this group will help you to broaden your classical book range.

Hi everyone. I'm Danielle. Thanks for the friendvite, Nicolle. My classic reading is driven more by my particular genre (horror, romance, adventure, fantasy, science fiction) tastes, but I have discovered a treasure trove of good oldies that I am delving into. Great idea for a group!

message 30: by Donna (new)

Donna (dlb0037) Hi - I'm Donna, live in Evanston, IL. I've decided to take on the classics in a planned way. I'm going to follow Clifton Fadiman's New Lifetime Reading Plan. My goal is at least one a month, and so far I'm on track. In December, I read the Epic of Gilgamesh. This one was okay, and thankfully, not a long one to start with.

This month - I'm working my way through Homer's The Illiad. A little more daunting, but I've finally gotten into it, and am enjoying it. I received great advice from someone to allow myself longer periods of reading so as to get used to the writing, and this is working quite well.

Initially, I was a little overwhelmed with all the names, and trying to keep straight the gods from the mortals, but eventually, I caught on.

Looking forward to posting and would welcome anyone who is following a similar path!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Donna, good luck to you. I am intimidated to read the Iliad. I don't really have the patience for long poems. So, I am impressed with you!

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) I'll have to go with Danielle, Donna good luck there, I've read Iliad but its only got two stars in my list because I've really got to re-read it.....twice...

message 33: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hey Donna and Danielle, The Iliad is on my to read list so let me know how you get on.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Hi Quinn. Welcome to the group!

message 35: by Daria (new)

Daria (dariadeptula) Hi everyone! The first books I've ever read were classics. When I was in fourth grade, my family moved to Europe, and in bookstores the only books in English were Puffin classics. So I've read quite a few.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Hi Emily!

message 37: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Emily and Quinn hope you enojoy the group.

message 38: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) I used to read classics quite a bit but I have lost touch with this genre - Sad when one comes from a long line of women who majored in Classic Lit during their post secondary career... I struggle with appriciating their love of "a good old book"

I can't wait to read with everyone here!

message 39: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Whytock Hey.
Late welcmes to the new members; and my apologies for not being very active. I've been very busy, it's been a nightmate, not a lot of time to read! =[

message 40: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I am picking up my copy on wednesday so will start then...can't wait, and hope you enjoy the group Pearlman!

Kristen Callihan | 9 comments Howdy, I'm Kristen. I live in Texas, and I'm a teacher. I like to read all kinds of books, but right now I'm mostly into young adult because that is the age group of my students, but also enjoy the classics because of being an English teacher.
