Implacable Resolve is the 12th book in the Last Hunter series by JN Chaney and Terry Mixon. We see many of our favorite characters in this installment, and it鈥檚 a lot of fun.
The story begins in the Vesuvius system, where we discovered in Book 11 that we were going to need more firepower and some troops to liberate the system. Admiral Jack Romanoff decides to return to Argent. He figured it would take at least a month to make the round trip, and Implacable Resolve is the 12th book in the Last Hunter series by JN Chaney and Terry Mixon. We see many of our favorite characters in this installment, and it鈥檚 a lot of fun.
The story begins in the Vesuvius system, where we discovered in Book 11 that we were going to need more firepower and some troops to liberate the system. Admiral Jack Romanoff decides to return to Argent. He figured it would take at least a month to make the round trip, and meanwhile the Novarites were killing the humans on Vesuvius in car lots. He resolved to stop by Leaping Deer on the way back and to attempt to capture another Kastalaran spy ship.
Most of the time at Argent was spent planning how they would scale up the training for the new battleship crews as they came on line. Derek is now in command of the 3rd one, and Amanda and most of the crew for her command of the 4th one are training on Hunter 鈥� so they are packed to the gills and hot-bunking.
There is also a lot of time spent at Argent talking about creating a flag bridge, flag officers鈥� quarters and briefing rooms, and how to handle fighter squadrons that will need to be on the battleships. They also needed to build out a Confederation Intelligence section in each battleship. Whew!
At Leaping Deer, there are Novarites and Tardans to deal with. Both groups have civilians and military, but there are no Tardan military left in Leaping Deer 鈥� the civilians judged and punished them. The Novarites have both military and a Leadership caste that must be separated from the civilians.
As if that wasn鈥檛 enough to slow down the liberation of Vesuvius, while at Leaping Deer a few Confederation Cruisers show up. The confederation were being teed up for liberation after Vesuvius. It鈥檚 not easy saving the human race.
Capturing the confederation cruisers gave them information about a set of portal gates that they could use to stop the confederation from infiltrating the cluster. Jack Romanoff decided to go blow that gate, perhaps after cleaning out any confederation ships around it.
Before blowing the gate and going to Vesuvius, he decided to go through the gate to confederation space. At that point, there was a surprise plot twist that may change all of Jack鈥檚 plans for the Novarites, the Tardans, the Kastalarans, the Navy, the cluster, and the human race.
On the whole, the book set the stage for what must come next. It had a lot more planning and talking than action. I expect that investment will see a change in the ratio of action to talking in the next book or two.

Bravo McGill

In this episode, McGill is caught on the horns of a dilemma. He knows the Hegemony is evil, but the Dust World rebels are, to his mind, traitors. However, among that group are Boudicca, Drusus, the Inspector, and his daughter.

Further, she is an expecting his grandchild.

In this book we see two other themes. First, McGill was s always flippant but in this one more so. Second, he begins to notice flaws everywhere, exceptions to order. ...more
