Cari Hunter lives in the northwest of England with her wife, their cats, and a field full of sheep. She works full-time as a paramedic and dreams up stories in her spare time.

Cari enjoys long, wind-swept, muddy walks in her beloved Peak District. In the summer she can usually be found sitting in the garden with her feet up, scribbling in her writing pad. Although she doesn’t like to boast, she will admit that she makes a very fine Bakewell Tart.

She has a hat trick of Goldie awards and multiple Rainbow awards under her belt, and has twice been a Lambda finalist.

Her new novel, A Calculated Risk, the first in the DI Jo Shaw series, was released in September 2023.

Cari can be contacted at: [email protected], via her blog:

Ooh, my first - not asked by ŷ - question! (thank you :-) )

The book title does relate to what takes place during the course of the story, but I wouldn't say that the events were due to random chance, more that there wasn't any legitimate kind of reason for them happening, and that once set in motion, the whole thing snowballed into something far more horrific than such a tiny trigger ever deserved. Hence 'No Good Reason' - once the reader realises what motivated the crime, the title should hopefully make sense.(less)

I would never say never to a fourth instalment, but it's very unlikely at this point. I know the series has a lot of fans and I absolutely loved writing the books, but I also loved where A Quiet Death left things and, to be honest, I'd be scared of mucking things up by writing a fourth book. I don't know whether you've seen it already, but there's a short festive story on my blog () which gives a little insight into where Sanne and Meg are a year or so later. (less)

Here we go with a brand new book! The Stolen Girl is the second instalment in the DI Jo Shaw series and the sequel to (Lambda and Goldie award winning and really rather fun!). I enjoyed this. It's fun and witty and romps along at a fair old pace. But it does all feel like a romp, something Atkinson wrote because she had a good old wheeze of an idea and fancied mucking around with it. The characters are all roaring cliches, ...more

“He might not have been the brightest spark on the TAU, but he knew how to kick a door down,”
Cari Hunter, Cold to the Touch

“I was fully intending to cook you something complicated and delicious, Meg said. “But then I started to watch this nature documentary, and a fluffy baby seal was being chased by a polar bear, so I muted it and shut my eyes, and when I woke up it was two hours later. How does soup and toasties grab you?”

“You can’t possibly be thinking of sending him home! He can barely walk. Meg’s smile began to slip. Ambulance crews were queuing almost out the door, and all this lad needed was a stat dose of Man-the-Fuck-Up.”
