Allie
Allie asked:

Is alphabetizing your books really that bad? Referring to Juliet when she says she hopes Markham Reynolds doesn't alphabetize his books. I personally alphabetize mine by author so my series are together

Amy Personally, I think this is Juliette's-Anne Shirley-moment (or rather one of many). In my mind, and experience with my own book shelves, I feel like she is saying that she has spots where there are the books she loves the most, the spots where subjects are similar, or how a certain book makes you feel...it's a personalized, not practical, and definitely not formulaic system. This is one of those systems you couldn't figure out if you tried, because the system is as unique as the person who makes it up. That is my guess, because that's how I am.
Katherine My bookshelves are colour coded by their spines, Allie, so I'm somewhat biased when I say, "NO! Organizing your books however you want is not bad, in fact, it's wonderful!" To each their own, in my opinion. A haphazard collection of books is in no way superior to a collection organized along some theme.
Amber No, there's nothing wrong with it. It's just that some people get wound up by people who are either (a) neater than they are, or (b) messier than they are. I guess Juliet is one of those people.

I'm with you. Mine are by author, then by series.
Aleena I have mine arranged according to size. I try to keep books by the same author together. *Shrug*
Nothing wrong with whatever it is that you feel like doing. Your books, your shelves, your personal preferences!
EL I don't organize (except generally by topic), but I think that was just one of her issues. Sort of like Archie Goodwin in the Nero Wolfe mysteries not liking women who don't shut their bureau drawers. . .

Personal taste. It's mystifying.
Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) One man's great idea is another man's nonsense, and vice versa. There is absolutely nothing wrong with organising anything in the way that works best for you. I remember going through my husband's extensive record collection when I was first married, alphabetising according to composer and putting them in opus-order. I was so chuffed, but when I showed him what I had done his reaction was "Nooooooooo!" Apparently he knew that if everything was all orderly, he'd just listen to the same ones all the time.

Alphabetising your canned goods and spices is a bit extreme, however I know some people do it.
Nancy Wilson I usually alphabetize my books because I just have so many of them. I also lend out books quite often and if someone wants to know if I have a particular book I know where to find. I also separate fiction and nonfiction. I guess everybody does things differently.
Naomi I alphabetize my bookshelves to keep authors together. It helps me find things easier that way.
C-shaw I agree that it's not bad to alphabetize, which helps when you're looking for a particular author/book and helps one not to double-buy. That said, I did absolutely love _The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society_, wanted so much to visit the island!
Stef I like to do an author, then title sequence, in series, if applicable. But since I need to economize on space, the hardcovers I sometimes have need to go on a different shelf - so there I go sorting by size, too. And btw - for coffee table books currently not on the coffee table, I sort those into "appealing groups" - that can be colour, season, size, all kind of criteria! I also have spaces on my shelves for my current BTR pile, for books to give away, and for books that want to be entered into my goodreads next (usually second hand books).
I have seen places where people sorted books by spine colour, and I thought it looked very impressive. But for me, this doesn't work except for my classic literature penguins - my house is mixed colours everywhere, so this would look a bit strange here, I guess.
Flora McGowan I arrange my books so that my favourite books are more prominent, and these are in series order. I do have some shelves that are organised by size of book.
However, as a child, when we used to play at keeping shop etc, I used to pretend I was a librarian and made little library tickets for my books, then the books were placed in author alphabetical order.
Kayla Depends on what way it's alphabetized. I'm pretty sure she means alphabetize by title, not author. Personally, I think alphabetizing by author is the way to go. The way Juliet means... by title... that's something else altogether.
E Watts A lovely quality about books is that the collector may determine how to arrange them. Our bookshelves express our creativity. I enjoy keeping most of my books in Dewey Decimal order, but one set of shelves I sometimes keep in a “to read order.
Sixer By author and then by series in the same authors section.
Avrelia I put my books together by size... I know, I know, but I need to maximize my bookshelf space. So alphabetizing is fine by me
Nancy Mills I arrange mine by how I can best squeeze them into my bookshelves. I don't recommend this necessarily thought.
Jamie I alphabetize my bookshelf but only within each section. My books are divided into categories and then they are alphabetized by author. It looks like a mess compared to most of the bookshelf pictures I have seen or from backgrounds of booktube videos. It works for me though. I reorganized some of them by height and color. It looks pretty but I don’t know how I feel about the fact that my series aren’t together. Bookshelf organization is really all a matter of what works for the bookshelf owner.
Melissa I am with you! My books are by author, then size and series. :)
Iñaki Tofiño Mine are divided by genre (non fiction divided into foreign or Spanish/Catalan) and then by author. I was also surprised by Juliet's comment!
Ayla By author and then by series in the same authors section.
Neha Desai When i had shelves the books used to be arranged by genre first and then by the size of the book. I like the bookshelf looking tidy and I also like to maximise the space :)
Sacha Kay I've got mine on sort and within that, they're alphabetized on author.

Think every way of organizing them to "common sense" (as in: not being aesthetic) is a correct way of organizing them.
