I chanced upon this book in second-hand book sale and I am so glad that I did. It is a must read for people who love reading about our canine friends.
The stories are so infused with warmth and humour and full of such interesting canines and people, that you will definitely relish reading them. A few stories have a tragic ending though.

I came across this book at an used book sale. The title and the cover page attracted my attention.
I won't write a detailed review but would only point out that John Le Carre and Frederick Forsyth have appreciated the book.
Gordievsky's incredible escape from the Soviet Union after his cover was blown was awesome. Don't expect any James Bond-ish exploits, but some glimpses into the real word of espionage.
If you like non-fiction spy stories, then please give this book a try. Hopefully you won't be disappointed.
What attracted me towards the book was its name - Ebong Urnonavo. I had to google to learn that urnonavo means spider.Giving the book a rating of 3.5!
What attracted me towards the book was its name - Ebong Urnonavo. I had to google to learn that urnonavo means spider. Then the cover art made sense. The title literally translates into "And spider"
The blurb and a few GR reviews influenced my decision to give this book a try.
This book is written in the Bengali language and contains four thriller stories.
The first, which happens to be my favourite in this book, takes us to a remote Indian village where the zamindar family still held immense power over the villager. A zamindar is something like a feudal lord. Anyway the entire zamindar family has been massacred along with their armed guards. What is most perplexing is that the members did not try to defend themselves despite having firearms and traditional weapons at their disposal. The villagers claim that a divine power had punished the family for their sins against defenseless people. The story follows an experienced investigator's attempts to solve the case. The author would provide sufficient clues to the reader.
The second story is also set in India. The plot is around inmates disappearing from a prison in a small town. It was decent.
The third is a political thriller set in an unnamed Latin American country. It is about a man who resembled the president. Not very original I am afraid.
The fourth and final story which gives the book its name is a fast paced spy thriller where the secret services of several country will join forces to against a powerful enemy. Not extraordinary may be, but a fun read.
The writing is decent and easy to read. If you want to enjoy some thriller stories in a short period of time, then you might give it a try....more

I had borrowed it and read the first few pages but had to return for some reason.
Many years later I came across this novel at an used book sale. I try to attend such sales because you often get great books at quite reasonable rates. Anyway I bought this book just by looking at the author's name.
I personally don't believe that I can say anything new about Thomas Hardy. However, I shall try to add my two cents here.
The book was written serially in a magazine during 1872-73 and came out as a book in 1874. Naturally the language and sensibilities belong to that era. The novel is very well-written. However, the story, though exquisite, did not appeal to me. The book is a romance, genre which I don't care for. The version I bought did not have a blurb and I also did not check the net for the book's content. Nevertheless, my lack of interest in the genre does not diminish the literary merit of this book in any way.
Readers who enjoy English classics have loved the novel for decades. If you belong to this category and haven't read the book yet, then please go ahead....more

This historical fiction novel is the first book in the trilogy that tells the story of Krishna Deva Raya, the greatest ruler of the mighty Vijaynagara empire that had flourished in medieval India.
I appreciate the author's efforts to bring the story of this great ruler to modern readers. Some people do not take historical fiction seriously, but I genuinely believe that well-written and engaging historical fiction can drive people to explore more academic sources.
If you want to a quick and easy read and want a peek into the life and times of Krishhna Deva Raya, then you might want to give this book a try.
