New to 1001 Books...group? Please tell us your name and anything else you would like to share; your goals for reading from the list, how many books you've already read. Take a look around the site. Your administrators are Kristel, John, Jen, and Book Worm. This is a active, lively group who love to compete and discuss books.

Jan (mrsicks) Hello, I'm Jan. I've made my way here from Jen's blog, which I discovered through Jen liking some reviews of Japanese literature I posted on my travel diary.

I'll probably ease myself in slowly to this group. I have issues with GR! However, I will try to wrangle my existing GR presence so that I can join in the fun here.

I live in Manchester, UK. I'm an archivist and work in a museum. I'm married, no kids, but I am slave to my demanding 16 year old cat. Her constant demands for a knee to support her sleeping form are a good excuse for reading.

I've always read, I can't remember not being able to read. My Mum taught me to read. She worked in libraries all her life and brought home lots of things for me to try. She gave me the gift of reading for pleasure. My Mum now has dementia. Sometimes this makes its way into my reviews or affects the way I react to a book. Just so you know!

I read widely, I'm willing to give most genres a try. I'm new to 1001 Books. Without realising it, I've already read quite a few. I think I'm at 238 off the combined list. I know, what a weakling. I expect I'll start here by adding reviews of some of the books I've read, and maybe joining current discussions for books I've read recently. Not so long ago, I totted up all of my unread books and discovered I had 108. My main challenge this year is to read the majority of those without adding (too many) more. 11 of them are on the 1001 list, though, and hopefully some of those will fit this group's challenges through the year.

I'm looking forward to some new reading and stimulating chat.

Hi Jan! Glad to see you made it over here. I think you'll enjoy being part of this group. 238 is a lot to start with! Thanks for sharing and feel free to poke around and join in any challenges, discussions, or reading you find interesting. We are currently reading Cloudsplitter for our season read. You can see current books on our group page along with "coming up" books. We just voted for Feb books. Midaq Alley, Solaris, and A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian were the three winners.

John Seymour I would add that not everyone completes, nor is it necessary to do so. Some of us are even trying to sand off some of our competitive edges (cough, cough)

Welcome Jan, I aspire to reach 238 by the end of the year! I wouldn't even be close to that if I hadn't been ridiculously competitive in John's last challenge :) I'm still resting up from that one.

Welcome Jan! I'm years away from having read 238 books. Even though I added a lot of books last year, I'll only take the 100 books read hurdle this year... hopefully...

message 11: by Jan (new)

Jan (mrsicks) Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone! I recognise some names from The Readers Room.

I've been away wrestling The List into a spread sheet (I love a spread sheet) and discovered that LibraryThing counts Mishima's Sea of Fertility as four books, which is cheeky.

So. Is it better to make sure my GR bookshelves include books off The List that I've read, or should I start a personal tally thread somewhere?

Jan wrote:"So. Is it better to make sure my GR bookshelves include books off The List that I've read, or should I start a personal tally thread somewhere? "

I think you can do either. Some people do both. I have created a personal thread where I keep track of all the books I have read. I had started this on shelfari. Transferred it over here. You'll see how some members have created their lists in the "personal lists folder." Here, because GR allows it, I have also created a unique shelf for 1001 challenge that will allow me to track books with a progress bar. You can get this by signing up for the challenge and it will prompt you with a shelf name where you will add books that count. For this feature, I basically included all 1305 books and then when adding them to my bookshelf I will only include 1 volume of those books that have multiple volumes.

In both cases (both the personal thread and the challenge) I have gone back through the list and included books that I have already read.

Fab! Thanks, Jen. I've had a look at other people's and made my own personal list now.

Claire (goodreadscomclaireg) Hi everyone, I was looking for a book group to encourage me to tackle some of the books on this list and this seemed like just the right friendly environment! I have only read around twelve books from the list, but you have to start somewhere right? I'm hoping I'll be able join one of the March BOTM reads to ease me in and look forward to discussions with all of you. Thanks,

Welcome Claire, glad you found us. Hope you can join us for our BOTM reads in March and if you have any questions about random lists, Calendar Challenge or challenge points, ask away. This spot will get you reading those books off the 1001 list!

Hi Claire and welcome! I'm so glad you decided to join us and I hope you enjoy the group. Take a look around - there are lots of challenges/games, tasks, monthly and seasonal reading. Hopefully you'll find something you like among all the things we do here. and don't hesitate to ask us any questions if you need help navigating around the group.

message 17: by Claire (new)

Claire (goodreadscomclaireg) Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone! Think I might start by joining in with A Fine Balance... looking forward to it :)

message 18: by John (new)

John Seymour Welcome aboard, Claire.

message 19: by Jan (new)

Jan (mrsicks) A Fine Balance is an excellent choice. If I didn't have so many other books on the go, I'd be re-reading it for the next BOTM, too. As another new member, I can say I think you'll enjoy this group. Everyone's friendly and up for discussion about books. Most importantly, though, nobody makes you feel stupid!

Dianne (deemitchell) Hi, i am dee, i live in the uk, love reading as i am disabled, recovering from cancer so have a lot of time on my hands. I have read 278 books off the list at present, and on a good month aim to take 6 off the list. I have read a lot of the shorter books, as it seemed a good place to start. I am hoping to find some new friends with a like interest.

and the handy guide can be found at the link (below). It was set up primarily for Shelfari folk transitioning over here so a lot of detail about how to use GR groups but there's also general info on the group and our types of discussions.

For the Month of June, you can find the books listed on our homepage and the discussions for each book in the discussions folders. Jump right on in if any of the books interest you.

Dianne (deemitchell) Wow! Detailed and slightly daunting document, but very interesting and well explained thanks. I will start by trying to do the botm and wading in on discussions, and see how i get on i think.

Diane | 2044 comments Hello, I am also a Diane :)

I am a nurse educator, in college studying to become a nurse practitioner. I live with my two human children and several animal children in the metro-Atlanta area. I love to read (of course), but I also love outdoor activities, such as hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, swimming, and camping. I also enjoy cooking, yoga, word games of any kind, and traveling. I hate to watch TV, so it frees up a lot of time to read (odd, I know). I have been actively reading from the 1001 list since I discovered it in 2009. I am currently at 425 books, and hope to read the rest of them over the next 12-15 years (which seems like a really, really long time). I currently read them at a rate of 50-75 per year, so I am on track. I am currently trying to increase my proportion of 1001 books to other books in an effort to try to possibly finish sooner, but it isn't easy, since there are so many books I want to read. I am hoping that membership in groups like this one will motivate me to do so. I am a world literature junkie, so I tend to gravitate toward 1001 books written by foreign authors first, vs. those written by US authors.
