trim

/³Ù°ùɪ³¾/

verb: make (something) neat or of the required size or form by cutting away irregular or unwanted parts.

noun: an act of cutting something in order to neaten it.

A regular bookshelf has 4 sides so we are going to "trim" its 4 "sides" (ie. 4 different ways).

1. How many?!?!
Look at the total number of your TBR, take the last digit and read that many books off your TBR. If you have a "0", read 10 books.
Try to read what's already on your TBR prior to starting this challenge. You may concentrate on a certain TBR shelf if you have a number of TBR shelves.

2. Popularity
Sort your TBR by "number of ratings" and read:
a. Books with the highest number of ratings
b. Books with the least number of ratings
Try to read the same number of books (a+b) as you did for (1) above, if not more.

3. Monstrosity
Read 1 (one) of the 5 thickest books on your TBR.
Yes, the biggest book and just the One. If the thickest is 1,000+ pages but the 5th thickest is only 300+ pages, DO choose the book closest to 1,000+ pages

4. Catch Up
Read that last book in the series!
Or at least, catch up to the latest instalment.
You must have read at least the first book before October 2016. Again, try to read the same number of book you read for (1), if not more.

I've just shared with the other mods, Dee, that my own tbr is very close to reaching critical mass. I really need to trim it and this should help a tiny bit.

4 books for "1. How many?!?!"
4 books for "2. Popularity"
1 book for "3. Monstrosity"
4 books for "4. Catch Up"

So your goal will be 13 books MIN :)

Easy right ;p

As in collections of serial (ie. box sets)?
If so, one of your longest single title books will be ok unless of course, if you want to read a box set :)

Dee (austhokie) | 2689 comments Dee's List

10/28

1. How many?!?! - 649books - read 9 books
Texas Hold Him - 10/20/16 - short and sweet historical - the main characters name was kind of goofy (Dyer Straights), but other than that, solid read - 3.5 overall
Malicious Intent - interesting mystery, liked the forensic aspect - did feel a bit dated at times, but am considering continuing the series - 3 overall
Destiny
Fade to Black
To Seduce a Sinner
Snowfall at Willow Lake

2. Popularity
a. Books with the highest number of ratings
Lolita
b. Books with the least number of ratings
Try to read the same number of books (a+b) as you did for (1) above, if not more.

3. Monstrosity
Return Engagement - 656pgs (#3 on list)

4. Catch Up - 9 books
Lothaire (IAD #12) - been waiting for Lothaire's story and it didn't disappoint - one of the few bad guy ones that i've enjoyed - and Ellie made me laugh
Shadow's Claim (IAD #13) - interesting spin-off (although I kind of knew who he ended up with because I had already listened to Dark Syke; I loved that Bettina wasn't a total pushover and her jewelry making was kind of cool.
MacRieve (IAD #14)
Bitter Medicine (V.I. Warshawski #4) - 10/9/16 - Its always weird how well books written in the 1980's stand up to the test of time and Bitter Medicine was no different; I did kind of figure out the who done it early on (or at least had inklings), but how it rolled out was well-done
Kiss of Frost (Mythos Academy #2) - 10/16/16 - picking up just after it left off, Gwen continues to find her way in the new world she has become a part of; she remains a bit of an outsider, once again faced with someone trying to kill her - at first it felt a bit disjointed and like i was missing something, but i soon got back into the story - i'll be continuing it when i get a chance
Sweet Temptation (Sweet #4) - 10/14/16 - its interesting in erotic romances how they get progressively darker as the series goes - what started out as sister crushing on her brothers friend, turned into a rather dark erotic romance that featured significant portions of BDSM and multiple sexual partners. Wasn't my favorite in the series, but i'll likely continue
The Curse of Tenth Grave (Charley Davidson #10) - was kind of disappointed in this one - it just didn't really seem to further the story all that much - Charley was kind of annoying during it.
Sweet Cinderella (Klaus Brothers #4) - 10/8/16 - I held off reading this one until the last book in the series was due out and since Penny has been posting teasers on Facebook, it seemed like time. This was probably the quickest read of the 4 so far, but liked the meshing of the cold financial guru and the believe in miracles single mom - a magical christmas read
Magic Binds - so much love for Kate Daniels - while the last book was kind of disappointing, this one made up for it - but now the agony of waiting for the next book - which is so NOT fair!

Here is my reading list for this challenge:

Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton
2a. Read the two books with the most ratings
One Plus One by Jojo Moyes 88,553 ratings

2b: Read the two books with the least ratings:

The Burying Ground: A Thaddeus Lewis Mystery by Janet Kellough 40 ratings
3. Read one of the 5 thickest books
The Barefoot Queen by Ildefonso Falcones 704 pages
Somerset by Leila Meacham 624 pages
4. Read the last or next book in a series

I was wondering the same thing. I don't think we specifically talked about it, but usually we require 120 pages at least to be considered a book. Tien can confirm that.

Wow, Tien is right. What a list. But don't worry about finishing. I am the same way with a lot of challenges. I love to join, but don't necessarily finish....although I usually don't have a list of such daunting books as the cause. Good luck and I hope you get pretty far!

I was wondering the same thing. I don't think we specifically talked about it, but usually we require 120 pages at least to be considered a book. Tien can confirm that. "

Unless specifically addressed in the rules, we don't usually worry about page numbers so you go ahead & read those short books, Dee... especially seeing that your goal would be pretty high -these shorts will make it feasible ;)

I only recognise 2 books on your list, Lusie! Stephen King's one (of course!) and The Lost Symbol which I'll also be reading but for my most popular books. I've had it out since the beginning of the year and it's collecting dust on my dresser lol

On my list is a book by Robert Goddard, who is one of my favourite authors. What I like is that it is so hard to guess into which direction the story will go next. Often the book is about a murder or a missing person/item. You should give one of his books a try.
Another book that is on my list is This Was a Man (The Clifton Chronicles, #7) by Jeffrey Archer . I really enjoyThis book is the last one, and I'm really looking forward to this book. This series. It starts with Harry Clifton when he is a boy, and later on it is about him and his family. Greats series. You might like it too.

I looked at your list and I I recognise some of the authors and have only read 1 book of it, The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd . I liked that one. I hope you will like it. I know none of the series. Are they any good?

And... I came home with 2 additional books yesterday so that's upped my # to 7*gasps*

As long as there's no bookmail today, I think I still might be ok ha ha ha

about half the books on my list are Aussie so am not surprised that you're not familiar with them :)

I really loved Blackthorn & Grim trilogy; it's written by one of my fave authors, Juliet Marillier. She just has this amazing talent as a storyteller; I think of her, literally, as a bard.

I've also enjoyed Rowland Sinclair series mostly due to setting and the way she's incorporated some historical incidents & personages into her fictional world.

And hmmm... this exercise is supposed to be trimming down our tbrs not add to it lol

Oh my gosh, Tien, the same happened to me... I hadn't thought about it... Yesterday I got two books in the mail, which I had ordered last week.. I had ordered more books so I hope none come today, lol!

I'll have to up my goals to 6... for a total of 19 books... aaargh!

aww, we missed you, D.G.!
The 1 good thing about this challenge is that you're reading completely off your own tbr. Give it a go, you could at least complete #1 :)
