Rejuvenation points can be gained in Round 2.

Thus only books read and used in round 2 can count for the ladder.

Hi Shelby,
When I made the task I was only thinking of the 2018 list. ( There are a lot of choices just in that year alone)

Shanna_redwind | 598 comments I understand about tit being in round 2 now, but I still dont quite understand the wording of one of the rules for the Ladder:
Books used in the ladder do NOT need to be different books to what you are using in your countdown or safezone tasks.

To me, this implies that they dont need to be different, but they can be. Why not just say that they must be part of the countdown and safezone tasks.

All books used in regeneration count towards your total books read. This seems again to imply that there is the ability to read books that we somehow may not have thought would be counted.

Originally, I thought these had to be extra books above and beyond the task books but then read the "does not need to be different", and it truely sounded like we could both use books we read for the tasks and extra books we were reading specificly for the regeneration

Hi Shanna, sorry if the wording caused confusion. To be clear:

All books used in the ladder MUST be books used in the countdown / safezone tasks

right.

FWIW: any hyphenated words count as one word (though ignore the hyphen (e.g. sci-fi). If there's a space, it's two words even if it feels like one phrase (e.g. African American)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2248 comments Okay, this was posted: "Safezone Group 1 : Complete in round 2 and receive 50 bonus points!" We already finished Safezone 1, so does that mean we can't get the 50 bonus points since it was finished in round 1?

Also, I know there is a countdown clock which says we have a little over 3 days before round 2 starts. Does that mean we have until then to finish round 1? I can't seem to find a countdown clock for when round 1 SS has to be finished. We're working on the spell-out words now and don't want to be caught short!

Yes, Round 1 finishes at the same time Round 2 starts.

If you confirm here what you want to do that'll be enough.

Explicit confirmation helps us, so we aren't guessing if it's a mistake or not :)

If you are changing, don't forget that you'll be penalised if you don't meet the safezone group requirements

Ummmm.... you should be shelving the edition you read!

If we follow the link in your spreadsheet and see a mismatch in what you are claiming and the edition used we'll likely dock the points...

message 216: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments is it okay if we shelve the default edition [i always do this no matter what edition i actually read] but link to the 'correct' edition in the spreadsheet if it affects the task in some way? i find that trying to shelve whatever edition i'm actually reading often leads to me ending up with duplicates on my shelves so i always just do the default unless it's in a different language or something.

Ok, thank you! I think I mixed up some rules with other challenges I've done re: audio editions. I'll make sure it all matches :)

Devann wrote: "is it okay if we shelve the default edition but link to the 'correct' edition in the spreadsheet if it affects the task in some way?"

So, when we (I, at least, I can't speak for the other mods) do checks, we are going to go by the book linked in the sheet. If there's no link, we'll do a search (and grumble loudly), and use the default.

If you've linked a book, we assume that is the one you read and are using to fit the task, and will assess it's merits accordingly. So: if you link to a kindle ed and claim a narrator name: we'll penalise you; if you link to a blue ed and claim it's red: we'll penalise you.

If we search for it: (1) we'll just use the default edition, which may or may not work and (2) won't guarantee we'll find the right book.

Other mods may be kinder / more diligent than I, but I wouldn't rely on it, and strongly urge teams to double-check that the book linked (and ideally shelved) fits the task requirements!

Oh, and if we penalise you & you request a 3rd umpire review, we'll likely look at what's been shelved too, and use that info in any decision-making chatter...

message 219: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments ok, thanks for the clarification. i totally understand that you guys have a lot of work to do with checking the books so i will double check my links on the spreadsheet, and it's good to know what you look at with an umpire review as well.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6357 comments Since book count is a lot lower for this one, can shorter audiobooks count? I have an Audible Original I want to read that's a little over 2 hours. The page count of books at 100 pages can be done in a little over an hour, sometimes under, so the timing should even out. Since it's an Audible Original there is only one version of it created.

Our rule of thumb (pretty solid one, mind) is that an audio of 3 hrs equates to 100 pages.

So, a little over 2 hrs will be too short.
Which makes sense too: 2hrs is a typical play length, and editions of plays that contain only the script will often be less than 100pages (I'm deliberately excluding consideration of scholarly analysis / introductions etc which add to page lengths)

Melissa W | 1817 comments For The Floor is Acid, task 7, I have a book which has different reads on the tin eye depending on which image I choose from a Google search of images of the book cover. Some of the editions come up brown, others are black. I used the image from the ŷ site, and it comes up as 67% black. If I link that page to our spreadsheet, and will be good?

Alysa H. | 3833 comments For the tasks that ask for certain letters in the author’s name, can some of the letters be in their middle name, so long as they use their middle name as part of their professional name (including in ŷ)? Like, people who go by “Firstname Middlename Lastname.

I only ask because I know we cannot use middle names for spell-outs, so I want to be sure.

Vicki - obviously I’m not a mod but since it’s in the rules somewhere I feel okay answering.

Yes, re-reads are allowed and it has to be at least 6 months between reads.

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Devann wrote: "can we not use middle names for spell it outs? i feel like i have used middle names or initials if they are listed like that on goodreads in the past and it has been counted ..."

The rules say “the first letter in the author's first or last name, and I remember being explicitly told on a previous team challenge (don’t recall which one) that middle names could not be used. I think the first letter of initial can be, though. Like, “E.B. White could be E or W, but not B.

So that’s why I am wondering in terms of ACID or whatever in the name. Like, in “Firstname Middlename Lastname would the letter D count?

For acid in authors name - you can use any letters states in the name as listed on goodreads

message 232: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So for a name like Alexander McCall Smith, we can use McCall?

But for like Robert B Parker-we couldn't use the B?

Is that right?

message 233: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 9886 comments Mod
@Mary MJABC.... I don't understand your question.

For spell outs you can use first /last name initials only
For find the letters you can use the whole name

message 234: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments I think they are saying we can use (in your examples) both
McCall and B for the A-C-I-D or B-U-R-N in name tasks.

(But you can use neither McCall or B for spell-outs. So your examples would only give A S R or P in safezone 3)

Alysa H. | 3833 comments Okay, just a point of clarification please about the BOMS for Round 2, Safe Zone Group 1...

In one place on the spreadsheet it says we can use “a current / previous BOM but in another place (and in the All About post) it says only “a prior NBRC BOM.
So can we or can we not use Recursion (the next Adult BOM, starts Sept 2 2019)?

I figured it would be fine so long as I don’t finish it before 2 Sept, whereupon it will become a Current BOM. But if it actually needs to be a Prior BOM, then it would not be okay to use for Safe Zone 1 until after September. So.... ?

I think because we have written current/previous BOM in the SF1 text on the spreadsheet, we need to honour that. It was probably one of those things we changed along the way and then didn't update all the places in the template before launching the challenge
(I'll change the template for rounds 3 & 4 )
