2nd Quarter Challenge: Sharon's Spring Challenge

I'll go in for 7 to start - I'm not sure exactly how many I'll be able to do this quarter.

I recommend The Golden Compass because it has an interesting world where everyone has a daemon, a magical animal companion with a very close connection to them. In children, the daemon can change animal shapes, but by the time you grow up, your daemon has only one shape (usually representative of your personality in some way). It's not super "steampunk", so it might be a good intro. Disclaimer: The first time I read this book, I couldn't finish it, but I was glad when I finally did.
Leviathan is kind of strange and definitely feels like a young adult book. It is an alternate history of World War I. There are lots of mechanical constructs and zeppelins that are basically genetically engineered creatures. (As I said, a little strange.)
Boneshaker is about a gas that was released from the earth near Seattle, WA (my hometown!) that turns everyone who inhales it into a zombie over time. They built a wall around the city and people live outside, but when Briar's son enters the walled-off city, she goes in after him. It was a pretty entertaining story.
The Time Machine is an older short story where the technology isn't the focus. The inventor builds a time machine, but it's more about what he sees when he goes far into the future. I found it to be more of a criticism of the Marxism of the time Wells was writing in rather than a story about the future.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo - 24/4/15 (Cosette had a 'spring in her step' when she fell in love with Marius and got married)

I'm going to use Chocolate for No. 3 - read a book that takes place in the spring. The book begins in February and ends in April - in England & France, spring is from March to May, so this fits for me :-)

You could use it for #11, the newest book on your TBR list if you haven't had it on your list long.
It is a romance book, so I imagine the characters are happy. The main character is a chocolatier, I think she is confident. So I think it would fit for #12
