Nanci | 1864 comments I loved All the Light We Cannot See!
Judith, thanks for doing all that logging! I was tied up with a dinner party at our house tonight. Hope to get some reading in tomorrow.

Did you like Goldfinch? I read it years ago, shortly after it came out. I liked it a lot, but didn't go gaga over it like so many others. The Vegas part was the part I could have done without."

It was okay, I guess. I skipped a few parts when it got too boring. I enjoyed the bits about Amsterdam as I used to live in Holland.

Nanci | 1864 comments Chava,
So cool you used to live in Holland! We're going on a bike and barge trip there mid-April and hopefully see the gorgeous tulips. My friend also told me the museum where we could view the Goldfinch painting. After our barge trip my husband and I are going to tour around the area to different towns on our own. We have some ideas, but if there are sites not to be missed, (especially off the beaten path) please let me know! :)

I liked it although it wasn't the best mystery/thriller in my opinion. I loved the premise but didn't like the way certain aspects were done primarily the ending which didn't fit with the rest of the book to me. But overall, it was still an interesting read.

I haven't lived there for over 20 years, so I have no idea what's there now. Have a great time cycling, I know it's a great country for that!

Nanci | 1864 comments Will do, Chava!

I finished Such a Fun Age, which was a Reese Witherspoon book club read. So far I've read two books from her book club and not too thrilled with either one. Most reviewers gave this 4 or 5 stars, but it was a 3.5 for me. Such an important topic, but just not impactful for me. If any of you choose to read it, I'd be curious to see what you think. Maybe I'm just missing something. I'm really loving American Dirt and only 30 pages into it. It's almost 400 pages, but hoping to get it finished in the next 2 days.

Robynne Lozier OK I have posted 3 new books on the tracking sheet so that should help!!

2 of them can be used for the 1 cards in hand 1 since they are both 1st in series....

message 458: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Robynne,
I used 2 of yours for the 1 cards in hand 1 and the other for a Skip card.
Karen, looks like the type of book I would like!

message 459: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments OMGosh! I just finished American Dirt. So incredibly great! I stayed up until 4:45am reading it! I just couldn't put it down. My advice...don't start reading it at 11:30pm when you go to bed, or you'll be like me and have a book hangover! lol

message 460: by Chava (new)

Chava | 528 comments Nanci, I’ve started American Dirt too. It’s amazing!!

message 461: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Oh yay! So glad you’re liking it!

Robynne Lozier Well the good news is that our family transportation issues have FINALLY been fixed.
The repair place said they could not get the parts and yet hubby could purchase the parts he needed online!!
The vehicle in question is old - more than 10 years old - but we never got around to getting it replaced and that model is no longer bring made, We LIKE this model!!
Hubby will venture out later today to get some cash and pick up a few things (items of food) that we have missed.
But otherwise we do plan to stay in self isolation since it has been pretty good so far!!
I have mostly been watching all the videos online of what is happening in Italy, UK, Canada and the USA.
I should get back to reading!! LOL

message 463: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments I'm so glad your transportation issues have been fixed! I get still wanting to stay away from people and their germs. But at least you can now go somewhere if you want/need to, like the grocery store or whatever.

And on a side-note, everyone stay healthy!

message 464: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier OK I read the first 2 books of a new cozy mystery series. I wont be reading any more from that series. Book 1 can be used for anything. I would like Book 2 to be used for the 6 card in Hand 1 so we can finally complete Hand 1. Character named Serena. I hope that is OK.

message 465: by Robynne (last edited Mar 11, 2020 07:57AM) (new)

Robynne Lozier Silly me - cant believe I missed the title!! Oh well, thats hand 1 finally done!! Thank you Judith.

Melanie (mvalente89) | 296 comments Sorry I haven't been reading very much so far this month. Work has been nuts because with the coronavirus they want everyone to be caught up or ahead on their work in case we have to close/work remotely. I'm where I should be with my work but several people are behind and I've been helping others catch up. It's definitely a possibility my work may close as there are confirmed cases less than 5 minutes from where I work.

Basically just means less time for reading as I'm working more than usual.

message 468: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments No worries Melanie!

If you need to swap out on any of your color books, just let us know. Otherwise, I'm sure we can cover whatever needs to be.

This virus situation is pushing a lot of things out of wack.

message 469: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Robynne, so glad you got your car up and running again! Hey, I guess it was like just having a trial run of being quarantined, which seems more possible as this virus continues. Both airports we were in today were like ghost towns! My husband and I were saying airports are probably some of the safest places right now since they’re empty. Crazy!

It’s hard to think of people not being able to go into work. So many jobs that won’t be possible, but for those who can do their work on a computer it’s a good compromise. At least a lot more people are now washing their hands correctly!

message 470: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier Thanks Nanci.

In the meantime, 2 more NUMA Books re-read and posted!!

Take care of you and yours

message 476: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Judith, I finished my book, City of Girls. Could you please add it to the spreadsheet, please. Excited to see what the new mini challenge will be soon!

message 477: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Judith, GR is not allowing me to add it to my shelf. I’ll try later or add when I get home.

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments March Mini Challenge is up!

This time it is a mix of tasks and books where we work the titles into a story.

Details are here: March Mini Challenge

And I will also put a link in a top post for easy reference later.

Also, here is the countdown to the start of the mini challenge. Basically try not to finish any books for the next 14.5 hours. LOL

message 480: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier I'll do the cozy mystery since I brought a whole bunch of those.

message 481: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Robynne wrote: "I'll do the cozy mystery since I brought a whole bunch of those."

I'll put your name down for that one

message 482: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments I have a sheet added to our tracking for the March Mini, start claiming spots.

I only claimed for the books I'm currently reading until others have a chance for a go at the tasks.

Since the story gives us a lot of freedom, I'm thinking if a book works for a task put it there, otherwise, the story. Though if there is a really good title that fits in the story, I reserve the right to shift things around.

Happy Reading ladies!

Robynne Lozier Can I take the sci fiction one as well?

I am currently reading a sci fi book - and I will have to stop reading it for 14 hours since I am close to the end

It is also 2nd in the series and can be used to complete hand 2!!

Pretty please?

I can start up reading another book instead.

Of course!

message 485: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier OK have claimed the sci fi spot.

so we have to use 15 out of 25 books to make up a story about ourselves that involves food and a party...

interesting challenge!!

message 486: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Woo Hoo!

We have finished all of our 7 and Reverse cards. Slowly chipping away at those hands :)

message 487: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments I was able to pull up the spreadsheet to add my books I’m currently reading to the mini. I’ll hold off on finishing Home Truths although it’s going to be hard as I’m in the midst of the twists and turns at the end. Lol

message 488: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments I think my title Coversations with Friends will be an easy title to use in our story!

message 489: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Fast Women would probably work well in it too. So I might swap that out at some point and move it from task to story.

So team, if you have a book that works for #5: character who starts something new or #25: characters go to a party let us know and Nanci and I will move our books to the story.

message 490: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments I’ll be reading Smoke Bitten later this month when it comes out as part of my New Releases challenge. That should work for a few tasks I think. I’m hoping the prepares a lot of food.

Mercy is always trying to feed a pack a werewolves, there usually at least one scene where they cook up a ton of food.

I can take #5 with The Witness - she goes into witness protection, changes her name, new job, etc. Would that qualify? I hope to finish the book in the next 2 days (if I get to get into work this week, this COVID is really driving me around the twist!)

message 492: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments Chava, I would say your book definitely works!

message 493: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 1864 comments They’ve closed all the ski resorts, so we’re trying to get our flight changed to get home earlier. Our daughter-in-law is already dilating and she’s not due until April 15, so we’d like to get back. We’ve been on hold for 4 hours trying to get through since the website isn’t working for the airlines. Hopefully we can get something working. We’ve made the long drive (26 hours) 5 times before, but hope not to have to do it again!

message 494: by Robynne (last edited Mar 15, 2020 05:30AM) (new)

Robynne Lozier Judith,
If you want to use With Love from Karen to fill that last 2 card in hand 2, that will be fine. It is the sequel to Karen so 2nd in series.

The next book I am just finishing up now - Compete - can be used for a 9 card slot since the author surname is Nazarian. This is also 2nd in series, but I think that 9 card might be more valuable.

Or the Karen sequel can be used for a Skip and Compete for the 2 card - your choice.

Compete is also the book I read for the Sci-fi slot in the March Mini challenge.

Robynne Lozier Since the end of January we have been self isolating and buying our groceries online and having them delivered. That was easy enough. Delivery was usually 1 or 2 days after we ordered.
But now that the Canadian government has literally ordered everyone to self isolate, we cannot get a delivery time that is less than 7 days away!! So we will keep that delivery time - and we will have to chance going out to buy a few things between now and then just because we need them!! I did not anticipate the demand for delivery to go so high so fast!! One thing we also cannot get are masks!!

I've swapped the books, #5 is yours Chava. And good luck dealing with all you are juggling right now.

message 497: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments I noticed one book from Patti: Blood Territory

and two from Robynne: With Love from Karen, and Devil's Gate

weren't on the March mini but were finished on mar 15th. Were they finished before the countdown and therefore don't qualify? Or did you not have a task the worked for and then are available for the story book slots?

message 498: by Robynne (new)

Robynne Lozier My two were both finished after the Mini challenge start time so you can put them wherever they are needed. If they dont qualify for the mini, that's OK. Most of what I read is for the main challenge anyway.

message 499: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 1874 comments Devil’s gate works for lights on cover (the headlights)

The one with Karen in the title might work for the story. We don’t have to use the whole title so who knows, may be that’ll be a character name in the story. Who knows? It’s hard to say until we have all the titles and start making up some crazy story.

I didn’t want to assume anything though without checking. With multiple time zones involved with this team it’s too much for me to keep track.

I’ll log them on the official sheet tomorrow (for the mini, I logged them in the UNO hands earlier).

Exciting you are about to become a grandmother!! I hope your daughter in law is feeling okay.
The airlines are a major issue at the moment. One of my colleauges is stuck in Paris (there are worst places to be) and one had to cancel her tickets to the US.
My husband is a travel agent and he literally is on the phone all day with the airlines changing people's tickets. I hope you get a solution soon!!
