I just finished reading this book and loved it! This is a story of the war in Afghanistan from a special forces solider's point of view, and it is totally different from the news! I'll be writing Master Sarg Zapata a review very soon. But if you're interested in the real story of American soldiers and the war on terror, check it out!

I can sum up my 5 star review by repeating a comment you made in your description of the book"The levels of political and judicial interference are real enough, in real life these simply have to be lived with. Many of the problems in real life counter terrorism arise from the need of a given agency to score 'brownie points' to gain funding."
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY - a book tackles an issue that has me disgusted at for years- and your book tackles the issue in a very clear - very gripping and well written manner- great plots- memorable characters- and quite unique- very much deserving of my 5 star rating

Thank you very much for the above. Are you by any chance angling for a signed copy!!? or would that come under the bribery and corruption heading?
BTW had a great night at the Brit writers awards night thusday, met Dan Smith, a GR published author, he didn't win, but no shame in getting beaten by Terry Pratchett. Second time in a month I've had a chat with him, what a great bloke. For all you star followers, Sir Roger Moore was there, still in fine form, as was the actress who was painted gold in Gold Finger, I have forgotten her name! it's my age! she is the most attractive 70 year old I have ever seen, full of mischief, she pointed out 'her big scene' was 42 years ago!!
One hell of a night! It would be nice to win next year, I'm working on it!
Thanks again, send me your address to [email protected] if you want a copy, regard it as a thank you for running this site.

Once A Spy (Hardcover)
By Keith Thomson
$25.9522 on hand as of Jul 23 1:04am ( - ALABAMA WRITERS)
On Our Shelves Now
Description
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drummond Clark was once a spy of legendary proportions. Now Alzheimer’s disease has taken its toll and he’s just a confused old man who’s wandered away from home, waiting for his son to fetch him.
When Charlie Clark takes a break from his latest losing streak at the track to bring Drummond back to his Brooklyn home, they find it blown sky high—and then bullets start flying in every direction. At first, Charlie thinks his Russian “creditors are employing aggressive collection tactics. But once Drummond effortlessly hot-wires a car as their escape vehicle, Charlie begins to suspect there’s much more to his father than meets the eye. He soon discovers that Drummond’s unremarkable career as an appliance salesman was actually a clever cover for an elaborate plan to sell would-be terrorists faulty nuclear detonators. Drummond’s intricate knowledge of the “device is extremely dangerous information to have rattling around in an Alzheimer’s-addled brain. The CIA wants to “contain him--and so do some other shady characters who send Charlie and Drummond on a wild chase that gives “father and son quality time a whole new meaning.
With Once a Spy, Keith Thomson makes his debut on the thriller stage with energy, wit, and style to spare.

Praise for Once A Spy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Praise for ONCE A SPY
“[A:] wildly original debut Poignant themes of love and redemption underpin an action-packed story line that includes exotic locales, high-tech gadgetry, and international intrigue. —Publishers Weekly
“First-novelist Thomson has his tongue firmly in cheek in this clever, engaging, and frenetic tale His knowledge of spook’s tools, techniques, and mind-sets builds verisimilitude... A terrifically entertaining thriller. —Booklist
[A:] breakneck thriller Thomson’s sharp humor, swift pacing and surprising twists are refreshing antidotes to the sober, overcooked, underwritten thrillers crowding the market. —Kirkus
"With great characters, nonstop action, and dark humor, all told in a fresh, energetic voice, Keith Thomson's Once a Spy is the most appealing debut thriller I've read in years."
—Chuck Hogan, author of Prince of Thieves
“It takes a huge talent to blow dust from the corners of today's comfortable thriller genre. Keith Thomson has that talent, in spades. Once a Spy is an important debut--as well as a welcome breath of fresh air.
—Lincoln Child, author of Deep Storm
"Once A Spy is the most enjoyable book I've read this year. Utterly original, it is an adrenaline-fueled concoction of sidesplitting humor and genuine suspense. Think Carl Hiaasen taking on John Le Carré and
the winner is the reader. What a find! I can't imagine not loving this gem of a novel!"
—Christopher Reich, author of Rules of Deception

Love of Chocolate (Chocolate Manga, #1)
by Nicholas Reardon
Nicholas says, "I have put two copies as free givaways so if you would like one just enter your name. She placed her make-up bag in front of her, opened it, then ignored the contents. She used it for show and always as a warning to the body that she may one day use it! She knew that people often complained about having a 'bad hair day', but surely they did not wake up in the morning to find their Hair had eaten a whole box of chocolates while they were sleeping! "

Being Naughty:
The Life & Times of an Erotica Novelist
On sale NOW in the Kindle Store
for $1.99
That's right! Being Naughty: The Life & Times of an Erotica Novelist is the first book in my The Memoir Series and it came out last week in the Kindle Store. Yay! In fact, just three days later it hit two of the Top 100 Bestsellers Lists in the Kindle Store (Sex and Marriage) out of 2000 books on each of those lists. And it's been jumping on and off those two bestseller lists ever since. WOOT!
Wait until you see the cover. I love it!!! I swear, Kittyfeather Press has the most brilliant cover designer ever (Alex, of course). And, yes, I modeled in my trashy lingerie for all of the covers in this series. Still Naughty (Book Two) and Always Naughty (Book Three) will be coming out in the Kindle Store soon. Can’t wait to show you those covers too. They ROCK!!
Okay, here's what Being Naughty is about:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What happens when an erotica novelist, whose life is as sexual and lusty as her novels, creates a wildly popular blog to chronicle her sexual exploits and her marriage to an Alpha man? And what happens when those erotic blog posts are gathered together and published as a series of memoirs? You get an irreverent, sex-obsessed, hysterically funny read. One you'll be laughing about and recommending to your friends for years.
Meet Laura Stamps, an erotica novelist, exhibitionist, voyeur, lust addict, hedonist, and sensualist. A woman who will tell you sex is her life as calmly as if she were discussing the weather. Well, just before her naughty lips curl in a lusty grin. Okay, you've been warned..."
Haunted Destiny- Written by Kelly Abell
Rated YA- Paranormal Mystery
Solstice Publishing
I must admit, I love the new cover of Haunted Destiny. It adds more pizzazz. A hint of “more thrills, which is fully discovered by the story within.
We begin, as we learn of our young teenager Destiny Dove’s tragic automobile accident. She is the only survivor of a terrible car crash which has killed her parents and baby brother. She still has nightmares and feels the guilt of her survival and their loss.
Destiny is forced to move into the home of her maternal grandmother, a woman she has never been close to, and be the new ‘kid at school. Her grandmother is some what “the talk of the town for being a Medium and owning a small shop selling all things occult. She lives in a tiny trailer and Destiny feels the step down in stature she was used to living a more elite lifestyle with her parents.
Destiny soon learns she has the scary ability of seeing and talking to ghosts. To make her life even more miserable, is her first living /breathing friend is Jake Turner. Jake is the boyfriend of the High School’s Rich Girl, Amy Morgan. Amy dislikes Destiny instantly, jealous of her relationship with her boyfriend. It is through Amy that Destiny learns of her occult abilities and her unique gifts. Her Grandma tells her that this is inherited thru her family. Destiny is able to help Jake reconnect with his deceased sister thru her talents, forming a bond that transcends both planes. Amy receives some furniture from her Mother with something evil attached to it and Jake turns to Destiny for help..
Ms Abell spins a wonderful story of the growing friendship between Jake and Destiny. The normal trials of teenagers and the not so normal haunted destiny of a girl who has to accept who and what she is. The story you can see is intricate, woven well and beautifully told…I hope this is not the last of this story as I could see it going on and on and on…to a Destiny Series.
When I thought of writing about an Ayurvedic Physician, I remembered my ancestor, who had converted into Christianity from Brahminhood (An upper division in Hindu religion). Except this fact, remaining narrations are fictitious. I have created a mythological atmosphere throughout the novel. Freedom struggle of India, Communist revolt in Kerala, a Southern State in India, social developments, emergence of new societies etc., are dominating in this novel. The novel reveals the developments of incident that happening from 1920 to 1960. Although this is not a historical novel, nevertheless I am trying to unveil the personal life of an Ayurvedic Physician who had lived for the downtrodden people.
Please visit to know more about my novel. Also please let me know your comments.
I know I normally write thillers, the current one is 'The Day the Ravens Died' as in the Ravens at the Tower of London, and I write under the name Timothy Pilgrim.
I have a new book out which could not be more different, it was written at my publishers behest, under my real name Paul Rix, and has begun to make a bit of an impact.
It is called 'Beyond the Potting Shed' and is aimed at anyone, anywhere who is into growing your own fruit and veg, if there is a book out there with more PRACTICAL hints and tips in it, please tell me about it so I can get it!!
I am proud to say the first shop to stock it was the Royal Horticultural Society book shop, to a life long gardener such as I, this is better than winning the Booker, or Pulitzer prize, or any of the others, to be on the shelves of the R.H.S shop is the ultimate accolade!!.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]
Excellant to hear!!! and I love the cover!!
Congrats on the Royal Horticultural Society honor- no doubt very much earned!
Thanks for the good wishes Rick, I'd better keep this short as I have to get up in the morning, I've got a book signing tomorrow [sat:] starting at 10am, in Kent!! 150miles away!in a place called 7 Oaks.I believe 5 of them got flattened by a gale a few years back so maybe it should be called 2oaks now!
There will be a couple of other GR authors there as well, Sue Rule [cloak of magic:] and Carrie King is going to try to join us [Joni-Pip:] as well as a couple more who's names escape me just now. Should be an interesting day.
All the best, Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]
A quick question for those with e-readers-- do you ever download cookbooks? Do you feel safe taking a reader into the kitchen?
Recently, I sat down with Melanie Jackson, author of The Ghost and Miss Demure to talk about her new release, where she finds her inspiration and her lifelong love of history.
On your website, you invite readers to take a walk on the Wildside, visit the past and explore new worlds. Are you drawn to any particular genre as your "first love" or do all genres attract you?
I'm a voracious reader of most genres and also non-fiction, but the first adult books I read were Gone With The Wind and Conan The Barbarian. They kind of wedged themselves in the subconscious and an awful lot of the stuff I've written is some weird hybrid of the two.
Can you tell us about the inspiration for The Ghost and Miss Demure?
Ghosts are not my usual material, but since I'm both Celt and also have family in the deep south, it was probably inevitable that I would end up writing about ghosts eventually. Hugh Vellacourt, the main haunt, is a fictional character, but the supporting cast of haunts and eerie experiences are courtesy of my cousin, Richard Magruder, and assorted family legends told around the fire on winter nights.
I was struck by the first line of your 2008 release, A Curious Affair. "Everything was the same until I was hit by lightning." Do you often start with a line of dialogue, a fleeting thought, a setting, as your inspiration?
A Curious Affair was a very intimate book where the heroine talked directly to the reader and I thought carefully about where someone would begin a story about a paranormal encounter if they were not a novelist. However a story begins, be it epic or intimate, the first lines need to draw the reader in. I love a slow pace to build mood and descriptive narrative and all that good stuff-- but not at the first line of the book.
Both Writ on the Water and The Ghost and Miss Demure feature Southern plantations. What is it that draws writers (and readers) to Southern settings?
Ever been out in bayou? Nature is there, patient and hungry, just waiting to kill you. We-- humans-- don't belong there. Where better to place a story of murder and ghosts than in a place where cell phones and airbags can't save you?
You have a wonderful essay on your website about why you write. Can you tell us what writing means to you?
Being a storyteller is not just who I am. It is what I am. Life without writing would only be a shadow of what it is now.
Your husband said, "Melanie's first book, Iona, will always hold a special place in my heart." He went on to say that you both are bibliophiles. Was your love of reading what drove you into writing?
Since my grandfather asked, I announced at seven that I was going to be a writer, but I actually knew long before that. The first book I taught myself to read was The Night Before Christmas. It dawned on me that each word being read to me corrsponded to symbols on a page. Then my mom explained the book-- those symbols-- were written by a man called Clement C. Moore. I felt sandbagged. Someone-- some actual person-- had made up this story! It wasn't just a factual telling of events like dad talking about going to the hardware store, but something they MADE UP in their head. I wanted to do that too.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
Stick with it. Stubborness counts almost as much as talent.
Please click here to read the first chapter. It's tentatively titled, "Fairy" but I plan to change it when I can think of a more appropriate title.
