Of course. And actor Steve Buschemi (sp?). Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton. And the late, great genius, Steve Allen, a beacon to Steves everywhere.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Is it me?
Or has the world gone mad? first we have D.W giving his 'book' away!! This has had me disagreeing with J when he and I normally agree to the point some people think we are joined at the hip. Even stranger I totally agree with Christy!! In this case it is probably down to her having the bottle to say exactly what she thinks, and me trying to be diplomatic, but that doesn't alter the fact she's right!
Now we have Minne. As 'chief administrator', writer etc of Mz Minerva, the 'publishers' of her book, 'whispers from the mirror'. Can someone please explain to confused little old me how she could NOT know her book was published and posted on Amazon!!!?
I'm crawling back into my snow drift and hope I wake in a saner world when it melts!

Stephen Goldin (stephengoldin) | 36 comments I’m excited and proud to announce the reissue of my recently expanded satirical novel, Polly!. In one sense, it’s a simple boy-meets-girl story—except, of course, it isn’t.

Herodotus Shapiro has had an unbelievably bad week. His wife left him. The IRS is after him for thousands of dollars. His home/bookstore burned down. On his way to take refuge at his brother's place, he got a speeding ticket. And now his car has broken down in the middle of the desert in front of a large mansion. What more can go wrong?

But now his world takes a turn for the weird. The mansion has a snowman on the front lawn--in the desert, in July. The house, which is bigger on the inside than on the outside, is owned by Polly, the most preternaturally beautiful young woman he's ever met. Polly is an acrobat, a gourmet chef, a psychologist, an international financial consultant, a physicist and a woman of who-knows how many other incredible talents. She has an unbelievable library, an art collection of all the world's great masterpieces, and a print of a previously unknown Marx Brothers film. Her toilet paper is actually silk.

And she seems to have some mysterious plans for him....

One GoodReds member has called the book “blasphemous ... highly offensive. Several others, including our own, dear Rick, have given it 5-star ratings. Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Spider Robinson has said this:

All hands on Decalogue! A protagonist readers will find it easy to identify and empathize with, a classic journey story told with wit, wisdom and deceptive ease, and the most interesting guest star ever--what's not to like, here? Perhaps writers who attempt a book like Polly! wanna crack or two across the face for their audacity (to parrot conventional wisdom)--but not if they can manage to pull it off this entertainingly.

So ... ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice.

The book is available in both paperback and multiple ebook formats. There’s a special holiday weekend deal on the ebook version. Buy the book from and enter coupon code AV74C (not case-sensitive) and you’ll get it at half price. But hurry; the coupon expires Sunday, Dec. 26. Whichever edition you prefer, I hope you’ll give the book a try.

Happy holidays, and pleasant reading!

Mischa Auer is responsible for my getting into old movies- I saw him in a kid's film THE CHRISTMAS THAT ALMOST WASNT on HBO when I was about 10- loved him- but couldnt pronounce his name- My Uncle said perhaps I meant Mischa Auer- (I kept saying Miska Aver)- I looked him up in the library- saw he was a major character star of the 1930's and the rest is history!!

Rickey (rbray) My novel, Rendezvous Rock, is about a modern-day witch. I'm from Oklahoma, serious Bible belt country, and have gotten resistence in my community because they think the book is about witchcraft or promotes witchcraft. It doesn't. I invented a fictitious religion for the story. I've actually had people ask me if this is my religion - ridiculous! Watch the video trailer on my profile page.

message 283: by Minnie (last edited Jan 04, 2011 08:04AM) (new)

Minnie (minnieestelle) | 148 comments Rickey, I read your profile but don't have time right now to view the video trailer. Can I say that you have a hell of a life story to write. Your life reads like a Stephen King novel. If you can write what you've told us, understand you have to back away, try and stay in the background, and tell the truth without blinking, I think you have a winner.

May I suggest you read Stephen King--A Memoir of the craft--On Writing.

And read, read, read. You've a lot of catching up to do. Stay strong and keep writing.

On Writing by Stephen King

message 284: by Rickey (new)

Rickey (rbray) Minnie - Thank you for the positive comments. You're probably right, maybe I should write about my life rather than try to get another of my manuscripts published. And I have read many, many of Stephen King's book. - Rickey

message 285: by Werner (last edited Jan 05, 2011 03:46PM) (new)

Werner I do have an author forum here in the James Mason group for my vampire novella Lifeblood; but we aren't supposed to use those forums for sharing links where our books can be purchased. So, since I have some exciting (to me, anyway! :-) ) information on that front, I thought I'd post about it here.

Except for a self-published edition, Lifeblood has been out of print since my original publisher went out of business in 2008. However, another small press, Inked in Blood, has now brought out a reprint edition, which went on sale this week! For now, it's available only through the publisher's website (it will be available at Amazon later, but not until March because of Amazon's long waiting list). For anyone who may be interested, it's a trade paperback edition, with a list price of $14.95; the URL where it can be ordered is: . The Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ link is here, Lifeblood, so you can check out other Goodreaders' reviews, if you want to.

Wonderful News Werner!! And I must say- I do not have any issue with Authors providing links where their books can be purchased- as it is up to the member to decide if they wish to "click" the link. Some may disagree- but I feel that this Group should also be a place for those authors who do not have a large media or publicity budget to have exposure. One of the main aims of this Group, along with preserving James Mason's Memory, providing an online community for readers around the World to discuss all issues Books, is providing a place for for all authors, whether they be published by a big publisher, small or independent publisher or self- publish to have a place to discuss and introduce their books- I feel very strongly on all these Group Aims

Werner Thanks, Rick! And good question, David! Personally, I wouldn't want Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to e-mail every member every time a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ author offered a discount (that would fill our inboxes with an intolerable amount of spam), but e-mailing only those who previously signed up for a giveaway, as you suggest, would be legitimate, IMO. (Of course, some people might sign up for a giveaway only to encourage a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ author friend, but I think that most would be interested in reading the book!) Any James Masoners who belong to the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Feedback group might want to post that suggestion there.

It's still on Amazon and their Kindle but sales are slow... suggestions from other authors?? thanks...Liam

message 289: by Minnie (new)

Minnie (minnieestelle) | 148 comments As a self-publisher and "as a poor, starving writer, shivering in my unheated garret and living off stale bread and water..." a discount offer would be more attractive to me.

I'm going to advertise on Goodread's side bar. When asked if I wanted to do a free book giveaway, I said no for the very reasons David spoke of above. I didn't print too many books and can't afford to ship to many free books to folks. I will ship free books to several loyal readers, reviewers, and book clubs if asked.

Liam, have you reached out to book clubs in your area?
Do you know a credible person you can ask to review your book and post the review on Amazon.com. Have you checked eMagazines who might be interested in reviewing your book? Google book clubs and emagazines and approach them.

We all are suffering the effects of a very bad economy, expect sales to be slow.

All the best,

Werner Ouch, Liam, I feel for you! (At least Silver Lake was a POD publisher, so I wasn't stuck with unsold copies.) With my lousy track record on sales, I can't help you very much there (Minnie's advice sounds good). But in terms of long-range strategy, I'd advise not giving up on looking for a publisher to do a reprint. You can get recommendations from other writers in your genre, do some web searching, ask for referrals in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ groups that cater to writers, etc. Hang in there!

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Liam,
I feel for you on that one, I don't know how active you are, I'm 20 years younger than you and I've had to cut back on the travelling, but I still do as many book signings as I can. Think beyond book stores, although little local ones can be good, craft fairs, coffee shops are both useful out lets, a little bit in the local news paper saying you'll be at 'Rick's place'[ well?] at such a time on a particular day. Street markets, if you have them, even a regimental reunion, or veterans club. Some of my best signings with my 'thrillers' have been for charities, work out how much each book has cost you, balance that with what it is going to cost to get there and how many books you are likely to sell.
Cover your costs and the charity gets the rest. You shift some of your books, the charity gets a bit of cash, and you get some great P.R.
All I can say is good luck and don't over do it.
As for Dave!! he's on bread and water, with the heating off!!!? what on earth did you do, or not do to upset your better half. If it's as bad as that, probably best not to tell!
To all of you who registered for the give away, if you don't win, then make the effort to get 'CLAN' you'll be the loser twice over if you don't!! I'm not too bad a writer/story teller myself, and dare put my current thriller beside ANYONES out there, but Dave is a league or two ahead of me when it comes to writing. Miss out and it will be your loss. Don't let the self published bit put you off, if 'Clan' was mainstream it [and Dave] would be a 'cult' by now and he'd be back warm and well fed!!!!
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

I'm just glad I use print on demand, so I'll never have that problem. I'll send you my 'publishers' details if you like.
