STANDARD RULES OF THE CHALLENGE
(view spoiler)

message 7: by Ashley (last edited Jul 21, 2016 03:30AM) (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments description

About this Challenge
â— Wheelathon is the third of five challenges within our W.O.B.B.L.E
â— To begin, the mods will "spin the wheel" and assign each team a W.O.B.B.L.E themed word
â— The team's task is to read books to spell out the word for 10 points per letter
â— The team will get an extra 15 bonus points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out (i.e. the word is completed)
â— For each word there will also be a colour task that the team can complete for a colour bonus of 15 points. The colour task will be randomised from the colours and tasks shown under the spoiler
(view spoiler)

â— Once teams have read their word they can "re-read" the word to gain more points (10 points per letter, and relevant bonus points) or if they don't like their word, they can re spin the wheel to get a new word and the chance at more bonus points when completed. (Note: wheel can only be re spun if both bonus' have been achieved. That is, the spell-it-out of the word AND the colour task has been completed).

â— If the team finishes their word, and the two bonus', and elects to get a new word, the number of colour tasks required for bonus points will increase by one with each new word.

â— Each week the number of colour tasks required for the bonus will decrease by one (to a minimum of one)

â— If teams spin a word that is a team name from their group of teams (i.e. land, extinct, myth, sea, air, endangered) and they complete the spell-it-out AND the two bonus' for that word, they will receive an additional 100 points!
This 100 point bonus can only be gained once per spin.

â— Books used for the colour task MUST also be books used for the spell-it-out of that word

â— All W.O.B.B.L.E rules apply (e.g. page number requirements)

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's, translator's or audiobook narrators first or last name, the first letter in the series name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name.

As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

If your book starts with a number (e.g. 24 Bones) use the number to determine the first letter (in this example, it would be T).

If reading a non-English version, then that edition should be shelved and it is that edition that would be used for the spell-it-out. (e.g. Il nome della rosa could count for a I or a N for the title (as the article is optional to be used).

If reading a non-English version, and a colour in the text is the task, the word can be translated and found in the edition. For example, if reading a book in French and the colour word required to be found in the text is white, "blanc" would be acceptable.

EXAMPLE

Team Mods receives the word ZOO at the start of Wheelathon and the colour task GOLD ; Text of colour on cover

Tea reads Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho for Z (author) and the colour tasks
Kelly reads Oolong Dead for O (title) and Hounded for O (character Oberon).
This gives 30 points (3 letters x 10) plus 15 bonus points for completion and 15 bonus points for completing the colour task. Total 60 points

The team decide they don't want to redo that word and colour task, so they elect to get a new one.
A new random word and colour task is provided, but this time to receive the colour bonus points, Two books need to read the colour task requirement for the colour bonus points.

If the team complete the second word, and still don't like their word and want a third, then three books will need to be read to meet the colour task requirement for the colour bonus points.
etc. etc.

No matter what the team decides to do, at the start of the new week, the colour task requirement for colour bonus points will be reduced by one (to a minimum of one)

Ashley | 1439 comments Wheelathon Captain's Notes

For colours on covers, the colour must be 60% or more of the front cover. Use this colour extractor if you are unsure OR for colours that don't show in the colour extractor (e.g. gold) and you need a second option, get a yes or no answer from your fellow Captains in the Captains Lounge

For the other colour tasks, if you are unsure about a book, you need to get a yes or no answer from your fellow Captains in the Captains Lounge

Where a colour word is required to be found in the text, alternate spellings due to UK/US English is fine (example, Grey / Gray), but the word found must have the meaning as a colour. (So a character called Ms Silver would not work for finding the word "silver", but a silver bracelet would.)

For the 100 point bonus, this can only be achieved once per spin. So, if you receive a word that is within your team group (e.g. I am on Red Panda and I spin the word Tapirs), once we have done the spell-it-out and the colour bonus, we would have 90 points, plus 100 for getting a land team name = total 190 points.
If we decide to read that word again, we would only get 90 points (including the two bonus'). However if we decide to get a new word, and it just happens that the new spin gives us Tapirs again, we can again be eligible for another 100 point bonus.

When you get a new word, it is from a randomised list so it IS POSSIBLE to receive the same word more than once.

For the last week, you will be given 12 hours after the official end to post any additional books and finalise your points.

-------

There are 3 different wheels depending on your team. We will confirm your group just before the start of Wheelathon

Group A
teams reading 9 or more books per day on average during wobble
longer words
more of the "difficult" letters

Group B
teams reading 8 - 8.9 books per day during wobble
mixture of long and short words
mixture of letters

Group C
teams reading 7.9 or less books per day during wobble
shorter words
less "difficult" letters

"Difficult" letters ; as voted by players in our past Wheelathon (in order of difficulty) X,Z,U,O, I, Y, Q, V, E, F, W, L, J, A, N

We are in Group C:

ABOUT BINGO

About this Challenge
Bingo is the fourth of six challenges within our W.O.B.B.L.E Event
 Bingo will last 3 weeks

General Rules
Follows General Rules of Wobble Event
All Questions go to Captains/Co-Captains who have majority in decision making
Any questions Captains/Co-Captains cannot answer may be taken to mods BY Captain/Co-Captain only

Bingo Rules
Each team will be given their own unique bingo card.
The bingo card will be posted to the team thread and updated into the spreadsheet.
Bingo cards have two types of squares: text squares and picture squares.
Text squares state the specific task needed to be done to complete that square.
Picture squares have a picture. It is up to the team to find a book that they feel represents that picture.
To complete a card a specific bingo pattern must be chosen and covered. Additional squares may be completed outside the pattern.
8 patterns are available for each team. A, B and C teams have different sets of patterns.
Each pattern completed will offer a specific omni bonus to the team.
Bingo cards have two types of surprises: Power Squares and BingoSharks.
Power Squares provide a x2 or x3 multiplier onto the entire points for the square (example: 150 page book gives 10 base points plus 2 page points. A x2 multiplier would give 24 points total.)
A teams have 1 power square per card, B teams have 2 power squares per card, C teams have 3 power squares per card.
Every team has 1 BingoShark on their card. If a book is submitted on the BingoShark, the book will be eaten and cannot be used until the next bingo card is started.

Picture Square
Here's an example of the various things you can do with a picture square.
Example:

description

You can go for the obvious of "Cat on Cover"
The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide

Or you can do a book with a pet cat
Orange Is the New Black by Piper Kerman
Edith the cat

Or you can do a play on cat and do cat burgler.
To Catch A Thief by David Dodge

Or you can look into the symbolism of cats and read a mystery book.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson

Points
 10 Points per Square submitted
 Page Points:
 2 Points - 100-299 pages
 4 Points - 300-499 pages
 6 Points - 500-799 pages
 8 Points - 800+ pages
15 Points per submitted pattern (new card generated)
 Power Squares multiply points
 Select Patterns provide points

Banked Books
Books read for both Bingo and Labors of Hercules must be finished within the dates of the individual challenge. Books remaining in the bank after Wheelathon or books banked going forward may be used during Emerge the Victor, but we may limit their usage or the points they are able to earn.

Ashley | 1439 comments Power Squares

A teams will have 1 Power Square, B teams will have 2 Power Squares, C teams will have 3 Power Squares.

Power Squares may be 2x or 3x multipliers (randomly chosen) and are placed on random squares. They may appear on the same squares again as it is randomly chosen every card. A Power Square may appear on the same square as a BingoShark. The shark will be hit first, then upon re-submission of the cell, the bonus will be processed.

If you hit a Power Square, the square will be labeled with a "x2" or "x3".

BingoShark

There is one BingoShark on every teams bingo card. The shark will move after every card. The shark may be on the same square again as it is moved to a random square every card.

If you hit a shark, the square will not turn bright green. Instead it will be labeled with a "SHARK!".

If your book is eaten by the BingoShark you are unable to use that book again until you get a new card. To submit for the square, another submission must be done, this time the shark will be full and will not eat your book

Bingo Log

The Bingo Log is the source of all information about what's happening with Bingo. It will display submitted squares, bonuses, sharks, pattern bonuses and errors.

If you have a question about what happened, please consult the latest entries in the log before asking a question in the questions thread.

Land teams mini challenge

Just for Fun! While waiting for wobble to start

Books with a READ date of June 8-16 and 100 pages or more count.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

To Play:

Read books with:
- Land animals in the title (max. 2 per book) for 20 points each
- Land animals in the book as characters (max. 5 per book) for 10 points each
- Land animals mentioned in the book (max. 5 per book) for 5 points each
- Land animals on the cover for 10 points (max. 5 per book)

BONUS: Read a book that someone on a different land team has read for 20 points!

Notes:
*Shapeshifters DO count.
*If a land animal is being claimed as a character, it can not also be counted as a "mention".
*When reading a book a team member from another land team has read, it may have a read date before or during this mini challenge

You CAN mix and match for lots of points.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

For example:

Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews

Land animals in the book as characters (Derek-wolf, Curran-lion, Jim - Jaguar, Andrea - Hyena, Barabas - Mongoose): 50 points
Land animal (lion) on the book: 10 points
Bonus: Someone {name} on Land team {name} has read for 20 points
So my book is worth 80 points! (50+10+20)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Remember: This is NOT for Wobble points, it is just for fun and to get to know your fellow Land team players.

Land teams are:
Slender Loris
Tapir
Red Panda
Plumed Basilisk

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Ashley is reading Outlander too lol. Between the two of you, there should be enough land animals to go around ;)

Ashley | 1439 comments Hi Ange,

If you finish Dragonfly in Amber by the 16th then that will count for the mini challenge :)

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Haha maybe Outlander is really a book about animals... just pretending to be historical romance and all that?

lol where is everybody? Or are we just too excited?

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Sweet I thought it had to be started today or after, so far only two animals mentioned dogs and horses but will keep a careful watch out.

Ashley | 1439 comments Hi Dee - nice to have you here!

Any books you're reading now can be used for the pre-challenge as it's just for fun. For WOBBLE books have to be started after the commencement date

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Ange wrote: "Sweet I thought it had to be started today or after, so far only two animals mentioned dogs and horses but will keep a careful watch out."

Currently reading a YA book and I've also just had horses and dogs.

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Hi Dee and Angeline!

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Just to get the ball rolling ;)

Hi everyone. I'm Kathleen but please call me Kat because I find that being called by my whole name feels a bit like being called into the principal's office. I'm 28 years old and live in the hot hot capital of the Philippines - Manila. If anybody's coming here for a vacay, just shoot me a message!

Even though I mostly read fantasy, chicklit, historical fiction and crime (not necessarily in that order but close) I genre-dabble (yes I'm officially making that word). I read anything that catches my fancy. Some genres/themes I wouldn't dare touch though are horror, lgbt, NA romance and YA contemporary. But for WOBBLE, I can be (MAYBE?) persuaded.

I have read Judith McNaught's Remember When gazillion times, I adore The Scarlet Pimpernel and I think no one can ever be like Barrons. Oh, and I am willing to wait for forever for Megan Whalen Turner to write more books for the Thief series.

I am most excited for Battleship and Olympics. Which WOBBLE game are looking forward to?

And yes, if it ain't that quite obvious yet I'm a talker. lol

message 28: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments I'll keep the ball moving.

Hi All! I'm Ashley, I'm 26 and I live South Australia which is very, very cold right now. Kat...want to swap??

I read most genres except for romance, however I'm reading Outlander at the moment so trying something new! Fave genres are Contemporary, YA and Fantasy although I'm getting a little sick of YA and Fantasy right now :o

Aside from reading I like keeping active and spending time with the dogs. I recently started listening to audio books and I actually really enjoy them!!

I'm really looking forward to Battleship...but that could be because it means the challenge is starting :D

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Hey Kat and Ashley

Kat I hear ya on the Barrons front, Ive been meaning to reread those books for ages.

message 30: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 1439 comments Haha I've become quite ruthless with my TBR - I'm not allowed to have more than 350 books on there (I keep dropping it by about 50 a year). Hopefully then I can finish it in my lifetime!

message 31: by Ange (new)

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I really do need to have a cull

message 32: by Ange (new)

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Gah just realised emojis don't show up on the feeds *sad face*

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Ange, that's pretty much awesome compliment I daresay. From near 40 to what 17?

I have resigned myself to the fact that my TBR will always be full.

Ashley, trade places? Sure! It's rainy season here now though... so that's hot and wet for you.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Hiya,

I am Nicole though i usually go by Nikk. i am from Sydney Australia and just a few months away from the big 4-0.

I read a lot of fantasy and paranormalish mostly in YA, urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Like kat though i like to genre dabb;e and will have no problem with picking up a thriller or horror or historical romance if the mood takes me.

I am most looking forward to battle ship and olympic games but I really i am looking forward to all the games.

In terms of the mini challenge i too am also attempting to read Outlander but in the mean time I finished Alive last night which had a few animals in it, mostly mythical though unfortunately but still it did mention cows, pigs and dogs. I wonder if I can count a unicorn as a horse... LOL. I am just past half way with Miss Mayhem which I should finish tonight but I recall any mentions of animals so far though they have just arrived at a county fair so there is still hope :-P

as to the weather, after the big deluge we had last weekend its been quite nice weather here this week so i think i will keep it.

anyhew its nice to meet you all ;-)

Yup, FEVER series. It is Iced and Dani stars as the MC. Though due to rage over a lot of things over that book Moning changed direction in the 7th book. Mac gets the spotlight again.

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments No but it's on my TBR I'm trying to stay away from starting new series until I have finished the ones I've started, think at last count i had about 20 half finished ones. Hopefully this challenge will get some of them out of the way. So many books not enough time ha

kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 2305 comments Story of our life huh? But yes Kate Daniels is a great series too. I try to stay away from series with more than 5 books so I've only got Kate Daniels to finish (thank goodness). lol I hope JD Robb's Death series is not in that to-be-finishes-series list of yours.
