FAQ
â—ˆQ: Are there different point values for different lengths of books?
â—Ô²: Not for this. But you’ll need to consider your book lengths when working out how many books you will read in 2 weeks. For example, you may decide to use this challenge to only get to some of your chunksters and therefore have a lower number for yourself than usual
â—ˆQ: How long does the team have to complete the initial list of tasks?
â—Ô²: Two weeks (possibly)!
The aim is to read the 10 countdown tasks and then as many of the safezone groups as possible in the two weeks :)
â—ˆQ: If a team member doesn't want to play anymore, can we bring in a replacement?
â—Ô²: Yes, you can find a friend or post in the "Find a team" friend to swap out the previous player. Just send the mod account a PM so we can update the team spreadsheet
â—ˆQ: For the task "where the audio version has at least four narrators" , do you need to actually read the audio version? Or can you read a print/ebook version where the audio version of that book has four narrators?
â—Ô²:You can read any version provided the audio version has at least 4 narrators
â—ˆQ: Can we repeat words for Safe Zone three or must each word be unique?
â—Ô²:You can only spell each word once ; but if a word is used twice (e.g. "an" is in more than one task) you can spell it for each instance it is used
â—ˆQ: When it says for the LAVA spell out that you need to read a book another team has read, does that mean a book they've read during this challenge or any book the team member has read in the past?
â—Ô²: During the challenge
â—ˆQ: To clarify, you cannot start reading for the safezone tasks until the 10 countdown tasks are completed.
Or can we just not finish them before the countdown tasks are completed?
â—Ô²:You can't start reading for the safezone groups until you have completed the countdown stage.
So consider this with the team as to how the countdown tasks are assigned so that the big readers take on more tasks (or higher page counts!)
â—ˆQ: To add on to the question about not being able to start reading for the safezone groups until the countdown tasks are done... does that rule apply to the different safezone groups? I know you can't finish them out of order, but what about starting them?
Example: A team decides to do all three safezone groups. Do all tasks for group 1 have to be finished before reading can begin for group 2? Or is reading for group 2 allowed as long as it's not finished before group 1?
â—Ô²:From the rules; I've underlined the important bit :
You can complete all three of these safe zone groups if you wish, but you can't complete them concurrently. If you decide to start, but you don't complete a safe zone group, you will get burnt feet (but you will have the chance to regenerate later). This means you can start books for the safe zone groups at the same time, but you have to finish a group at a time.
So...
You start the countdown stage. You must complete 10-1 before starting any books for the safezone stage. After all, you are in Lava.
You jump out of the lava and hit the safezone. So now you can start books for any of the safe zone groups ; but you can't complete them concurrently. So you can start a book for safezone group 1 and 2 at the same time, but provided your team complete safezone group 1 before you complete your book for safezone group 2. That is perfectly fine to then use that book for group 2.
â—ˆQ: Question about the Countdown stage task 1. which is the author's debut novel: does it have to be a novel, i.e. fiction, or is also non-fiction allowed?
â—Ô²: Non-Fiction is fine.
â—ˆQ: Are we allowed to use books started during the first round for the Countdown stage of the second round, if they happen to fit?
â—Ô²: Use books started during countdown stage for the safezone stage? No.
â—Ô²: Use books across Rounds? Books for each round need to be started AFTER the round begins. So, for round one if you start a book, it is a good idea to find the short words in safezone group 3 you can assign it to before the deadline as you won't be able to use it for round 2 :)
â—ˆQ: Do books we started reading before joining a team (but are still currently reading) count?
â—Ô²: No, books must be stated after the challenge begins (Aug 12)
â—ˆQ: Is there a spreadsheet listing all the past BOMs?
â—Ô²: It is . Make sure you check the BOM tab as there are also BRs here. You can also look on the group bookshelf.
â—ˆQ: for the safezone tasks do we have to complete group 1 THEN group 2 THEN group 3 or could we do group 2 first and then group 1 for example, as long as we finished 2 before we started on 1
â—Ô²: Your example is correct. They can't be finished concurrently, but you can finish group 2, then group 1, then group 3.
Group 3 is so broad, you wouldn't want to start that one until you had almost finished groups 1 and 2 (or decided not to read for one or both of them)
◈Q: for words within safezone group three ... are we allowed to finish them concurrently, since it’s the same group? Or do we have to finish one whole word before we can finish any books for another?
â—Ô²: Yes that is fine. You can complete the words within group 3 at the same time. Just be aware of your timings as you need to complete the word to its entirety by the end of the round to get points :)
â—ˆQ: Are re-reads allowed?
â—Ô²: Yes, as long as its been 6 months or more.
â—ˆQ:For "Read a book with red writing on the cover where the title contains the letters L-A-V-A (doesn't need to be in that order)" Can the series name be included?
â—Ô²: No, only the title name
â—ˆQ: What is considered a character?
â—Ô²: There needs to be some dialogue and the person needs to have meaning to the story.
â—ˆQ: For zone 2, task iv, can LAVA in the author's name come from 2 authors? Like say a husband and wife team who are both listed as authors? And if so, does the last name have to be on the cover twice or is having both others listed with full names on goodreads work?
â—Ô²: If both authors are listed on goodreads and on the cover then you can use them (e.g. The President Is Missing).
Personally, if only one surname is on the cover and I wanted to use letters from both surnames then I wouldn't use it. (Karen) We are going to start a thread where you can ask other players, so if that is the case, then that may be something you want to take there to get some other opinions.

Not for this. But you’ll need to consider your book lengths when working out how many books you will read in 2 weeks. For example, you may decide to use this challenge to only get to some of your chunksters and therefore have a lower number for yourself than usual

4. where the audio version has at least four narrators

No captains 😉
The team may decide to have one, but that is up to each team. Otherwise the idea is four team members and all have access to the spreadsheet.
We just ask that one person signs up for the team as a whole.

10pts.
It'll auto-fill when you finish a task

If it makes things easier for you guys as a team, you can decide you'd like to create one, but otherwise, no, mods do not require you to have a specific shelf.

To clarify, you cannot start reading for the safezone tasks until the 10 countdown tasks are completed.
Or can we just not finish them before the countdown tasks are completed?
We just wanted to clarify because a lot of my team reads multiple books at once and we don't want Cat to burn our hair off.

there is: - just be sure that you are checking the BOM tab not the BRs
Or check the Group bookshelf - all BOMs are shelved there

You will only be able to use books you start after the challenge starts, 12 August.

Thanks for the quick response :)

No. A translator is not an author.

No. A translator is not an author.

Example: A team decides to do all three safezone groups. Do all tasks for group 1 have to be finished before reading can begin for group 2? Or is reading for group 2 allowed as long as it's not finished before group 1?

No, that's not what I was asking. What if I start a book during the safezone of the first round, but do not finish it before the end of the first round. Can I use it in the countdown of the second round, or do all books we want to use for the countdown of the second round have to be started after the start of the countdown for the second round? I hope that made sense...
