Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments Our Team Tracking Spreadsheet

You don't have to use this, completely up to you.

Using the tracking sheet
Add in all the info you can and when you read a book, just let us know in this thread it is read, but you don't need to include any detail as it is in the sheet.
If you don't want to use the tracking sheet
Then when you finish a book, add into THIS thread the book, date read, and then all the letters it may work for and why.

Reading for our cards
We don't need to "claim" any specific cards except the coloured. All the others please just read what you like and make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

Coloured covers
I will update our post above as you claim books for these

UNO shelves for colour cover ideas

red covers
blue covers
green covers
yellow covers

Howdy team!

This is our 11th year of UNO and if you haven't played before, then the best way I can sum it up is that this is a challenge where you can mostly read what you like, but have more fun by getting to know other players and getting great book recommendations.

I loved Firefly so much. Has been a long time since I last watched it, perhaps I will get out those DVDs over the challenge ;) I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you soon with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

As an intro, I live in Sydney, Aus with my husband and 2 boys and run a HR consulting business . I read almost everything except Horror, and I'm not a massive Romance reader.

I look forward to playing with you all!

P.S Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already

=====

Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on 1 Feb, 2025 at 9am UTC

Main cities, FYI:

San Francisco 1am
London 9am
New York 4am
Mumbai 2.30pm
Tokyo 6pm
Sydney 8pm

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this colour tool: to get an idea. If in doubt, ask me or a co-captain as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion. It is NOT required to use tineye

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

All the usual info is in the messages above. No need to claim a card, except for the coloured cards which please shout out if you have something that will work.

Excited to be here with you all. Watched firefly more times than I can count 15+ years ago but it's been a while here as well.

I'm from the UK with hubby and 2 children. I work as a GP and will read most things except horror.

Tina ❣ (nutrinut) | 283 comments Hi all! Welcome to the team!

I've never watched Firefly, but I think I will now. I know it's a niche favourite with positive reviews but I never got around to it.

I'm from Melbourne, Australia, and I live with my partner. I'm currently working in policy where I've been there for half a year (success!). We've just had a swimming pool open up near home, so my goal this summer is to go there when it's hot!

I tend to go through phases of genres which currently is fantasy, but I try to read most genres. I'm willing to try most books as long as they're written well. They can be a bit hard to find in fantasy.

Uno is definitely one of my favourite challenges. It's a whole heap of fun and a great way to find more books to read! Looking forward to playing with you all and I hope you all have fun :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments Hi everyone.

Pretty excited to play UNO for the 10th time. I'm a Mum of 3, Nanna to six who keep me on my toes and live in Sydney and also do admin for our farming business in southern NSW. Hubby and I are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year too.

I love Firefly and am really glad to be on this team. Pity it was cancelled so abruptly it had so much more potential.

Other than reading and finding colour covers in the off UNO season, my other passion is travelling. This year I'm heading off to Eastern Europe, Romania and Slovenia have been on my travel bucket list for ages, and I'm finally getting to go. Yay!

Looking forward to sharing with you all the UNO fun!

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments Hi everyone! I'm Kelly (she/her) and I live in Seattle with friends and my 14-year-old dog Cupcake. My granddaughter is my life. I'm on disability, but used to be in high tech. Now I have time to read all the time.

Right now I read M/M almost exclusively with the occasional dog-centered cozy mystery or non-sexist UF. My favorite genres in M/M are urban fantasy and thriller/suspense/mystery. If there's a bedside vigil I swoon.

I've just been assigned to this group because I guess someone had to drop out. (My UNO shelf is 2025-UNO-Browncoats.) I'm so excited to be assigned here in particular because Firefly is one of my favorite shows ever. Jayne is my favorite character. (I love Adam Baldwin as a person, too.)

This is my first time playing UNO so pleae be kind. :)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments Shiny!

Big time Browncoat here. Firefly is my second favourite tv show in the 'verse! (The first being Babylon 5, but there's not much in it!)

In fact, this was my ringtone for many years (and I may grab it again, only reason it no longer is was laziness when getting third new phone in 2 months because the first 2 were faulty!)

I'm totally planning another re-watch as soon as we kick off on the 1st 😁

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Aloha from Hawaii! Firefly is my favorite! Haven't watched it in years, though. Not really a big streamer because our big TV is 'dumb,' but I'm sure I could find it and watch it on my tablet...

I see lots of friends here in this group! *waves* I was happy to be assigned to Firefly -- there are a few group names I don't even know!

Looking forward to reacquainting myself with you all & getting to know some new friends, too. This will be so much fun!

message 23: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I don't even own a tv!! But I do have a desktop Pc with a massive monitor, so I watch pretty much everything on there (unless I fancy more oomph, in which case I hook it up to my projector!).
I have the Firefly DVD boxset. To be honest, I'm surprised the discs still work, I've re-watched them that often! 😆

The team spreadsheet or one of Karen's posts has a list of the cards we're working on. Generally some people end up reading aot more than others and multiple hands are worked on at once.

It's helpful if your books work for more than one number and if you let captains extraordinaire know that so they can shuffle if needed.

I don't know if Karen and Tina are planning a tracking SS, but given they're both in Australia I'll give them time to respond!

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments My husband hooked our TV up to an old desktop so while it's in the living room in standard TV location, it is only really used for streaming. Felt more efficient than buying a new TV to do all the streaming.

More often now it is used so my son can play Minecraft.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I've been doing some shelf-stalking, and have got a few books put aside that I can grab for reverses if needed.
I've made a note of them elsewhere, but thought I'd drop them here too so folk can let me know if I need to get on with reading them already! 😆

Karen: Villette by Charlotte Brontë A Caribbean Mystery (Miss Marple, #9) by Agatha Christie

Tina: Dead as a Doornail (Sookie Stackhouse, #5) by Charlaine Harris The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) by Rick Riordan The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5) by Rick Riordan

I highly recommend Brandon Sanderson! I actually didn't realise how much fantasy I read until the GR year in review this year told me. haha
Reading his Stormlight Archive series at the moment (although that is High Fantasy), but I have yet to pick up a book he has written and not enjoy it

I have found the best way is to just read what you want and make notes of all the letters it works for. You may find this post /topic/show/...
helpful.

You can use the tracking spreadsheet to keep note, or make your own notes elsewhere.

The only cards we "claim" are the coloured cards as they do need to be specifically searched for. And sometimes during the month we will do a general shout out for more Reverse cards (for example) that someone may decide to claim.

I hope that helps - it generally makes sense as we go :)

message 39: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3762 comments Coloured Cards

If you'd like to claim any for February, now is the time to shout out! As claimed I will update post #5 (here /topic/show/... )

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments I've claimed on the spreadsheet Blue 5 The League of Gentlewomen Witches (Dangerous Damsels, #2) by India Holton and Yellow 9 Mistress of Rome (The Empress of Rome, #1) by Kate Quinn .

I can usually find anything else once everyone has had a turn at claiming. 😉

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments Do any of you read M/M? Dog or urban fantasy cozy mysteries? (I know that's really specific.)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments Kelly (Maybedog) wrote: "Do any of you read M/M? Dog or urban fantasy cozy mysteries? (I know that's really specific.)"

I read pretty much anything including MM and cosy mysteries although not sure I've read many urban fantasy cosies. But would read anything to fit a task. My guilty pleasure is Space Smut, as anyone who's been on a team with me would know. 😁 They are surprisingly handy when filling out some tasks. (Horns on the cover as an example, LOL)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1504 comments And talking about smut, does anyone follow the Canadian comedian Farideh on social media. She is really funny and has a funny little skit out at the moment with the tag "I'm a slut for a little bit of smut." All about what secretly (or not so secretly) ladies are reading at the moment. Good for a laugh.

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 152 comments OMG Jonnie has an Urban Fantasy dog cozy mystery! They didn't like it and the reviews are mixed but I can use it for Reverse, 1, 4, 6, (and Draw 2). And I mean, dogs!

Can we use "The" for T?

message 46: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I also read pretty much anything (especially for a challenge), but those aren't my go-to genres.

Romance in general isn't a favourite, nor is YA or anything self-published 😆 And right now I am really, really over shifters.

Doesn't stop me reading them, but if I can cover challenge tasks with other books, I likely will.

Favourites include Sci-fi, Historical (preferably more action based, like Bernard Cornwell's books), classics, literary fiction, travel and/or food non-fiction, Fantasy (but preferably older... not enjoying the current stuff all that much on the whole), and I'm an absolute sucker for a good adult post-apocalypse story!
Also starting to pick up horror more and more again after a 20-year period of only reading the occasional one (but bingeing on them in my teens!).

I'm in the process of working my way through the combined edition of the "1001 books you must read" list (so over 1300 books in total). So I'll often try and squeeze those in, but they're not great for a lot of challenges (usually not bad for UNO though!), so I get to them when I can. Right now I'm reading The Man Without Qualities

Anyone have any must read recs I need to be keeping an eye out for?

message 47: by Sammy (new)

You can use or ignore articles, so if the title works for both, put them both on the sheet ( so the title The Picture of Dorian Gray could be used for both 2 and Skip, for example)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1012 comments I will be re-reading Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy, #1) by Jacqueline Carey in feb, which does have a lovely blue cover, but it will probably work for everything, so I'm not worried about finding a home for it 😆
